(Long Island, NY) Assemblyman Michael Montesano (R,I,C-Glen Head) is the main sponsor on legislation that would prevent New Yorkers from being the unwitting victims of surprise medical bills. Assembly bill 7253 would establish consumer protections from surprise medical bills by requiring better disclosures from insurers, health care providers and hospitals; establishing a minimum reimbursement for out-of-network services and prohibiting excessive emergency room charges. By enacting Montesano’s legislation, people wouldn’t have to worry about the overbilling and exorbitant cost when facing emergency procedures or are in need of treatment.
“New Yorkers face some of the highest costs in the entire nation when it comes to receiving treatment, and a large part of this is due to surprise fees, excessive charges and inadequate reimbursement,” said Montesano. “This legislation would address this by ensuring residents receive better disclosures and adequate treatment.
“No one should have to worry about whether or not they are going to be overcharged or surprised by fees when facing an emergency procedure or are receiving medical treatment. I urge my colleagues in the Assembly to take action and pass this bill, so we can protect New Yorkers and make sure they can afford the care they need, without the steep costs associated with it.”
