(Long Island, NY) Assemblyman Michael Montesano (R,C,I-Glen Head) is sponsoring legislation that would create the Alzheimer’s disease outreach and education program in New York State. This program would raise public awareness of the severity of this disease and other forms of dementia by promoting earlier detection of Alzheimer’s, providing information and assistance about early detection of the disease, and where individuals can find support within their community.
According to the state’s Task Force on Alzheimer’s Disease and other Dementias, 300,000 elderly New York residents have some form of dementia. This number is projected to increase rapidly in the coming years.
“Far too often Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases strike without warning,” said Montesano. “This program would provide New Yorkers with information to help identify and intervene with the early onset of this terrible illness. Our initiative would provide essential information and training to the caregivers and loved ones of those diagnosed to improve their quality of life.”
The program would be offered to medical and non-medical professionals throughout New York State.
