(Long Island, NY) After clearing the state Senate earlier this week, legislation co-sponsored by Assemblyman Michael Montesano (R,I,C-Glen Head) to address boating safety passed the Assembly today and now awaits the governor’s signature. If enacted, Assembly Bill 3471-A would require all persons operating a boat to obtain a safety certificate. Montesano cites this legislation as being crucial to decrease boating accidents and ensure waterway safety for residents.
“I’m pleased to see my legislation to enhance boating safety pass the Assembly today,” said Montesano. “With the massive amount of boating off the shores of Long Island, we must ensure that people receive the proper safety training needed to operate these vessels properly and avoid accidents.
“I’m hopeful the governor will sign this bill into law in the near future so we can protect our community and make sure that boating remains the safe, beloved leisure activity it is for so many of our residents.”
Bill 3471-A came about as a result of a boating accident in Oyster Bay on July 4, 2012 that claimed the lives of three children. Montesano’s boating safety legislation makes exemptions for those born before 1996 and members of any government agency that utilizes water vessels. It also comes with the strong support of several community organizations on Long Island.
