(Mineola, NY) Long Island women played a key role in the women’s suffragist cause, one of the first civil rights movements in the United States. Their influence had been largely unknown, but now the importance of their involvement will be revealed at this year’s NCBA Law Day Awards Dinner, “American Democracy and the Rule of Law: Why Every Vote Matters,” to be held Thursday, May 1 , 5:30 p.m. at Nassau County Bar Association headquarters in Mineola. Reservations are just $55 but are required by April 25 to guarantee a seat at this popular event.
The featured speaker is Antonia Petrash, who will discuss her book, “Long Island and the Woman Suffrage Movement” and her work uncovering some of the more outspoken upper class Long Island women of the day who supported the movement.
NCBA will present the prestigious Liberty Bell Award to the Domestic Harmony Foundation, a non-profit organization that helps women and children victims of domestic violence in the South Asian, Middle Eastern and Muslim families on Long Island. The Thomas Maligno Pro Bono Attorney of the Year will be presented to George Frooks, a long-time volunteer for NCBA’s Mortgage Foreclosure/Superstorm Sandy Recovery Project.
This year, the Peter T. Affatato Court Employees of the Year Award will be presented to five outstanding clerks, one from each of the five courts: Jeanne DelGrosso, Senior Court Clerk for District Court; Carolyn DelCielo, Associate Court Clerk for County Court; Maryann Camilleri, Senior Court Clerk at Family Court; Yolanda Mulholland, Associate Court Clerk at Surrogate’s Court, and Mary Gallagher, Associate Court Clerk in Supreme Court.
