National Jewish Sports Hall of Fame and Museum Induction Ceremony Slated for April 26
(Commack, N.Y.) – Seven distinguished people from the world of sports will be inducted into The National Jewish Sports Hall of Fame and Museum at the 17th annual induction ceremony on April 26, 2009, at 10:30a.m. at The Suffolk Y Jewish Community Center, 74 Hauppauge Road, Commack, N.Y.
The 2009 national Jewish Sports Hall of Fame inductees include: former Baltimore Colts head athletic trainer Ed Block; ESPN SportsCenter anchor Linda Cohn; track and field star and Olympic weightlifter Gary Gubner; former Executive Director of the MLB Players Association Marvin Miller; sports media legend Dick Schaap; former New England Patriots linebacker Andre Tippett; and Olympic swimmer Dara Torres.
“Our inductees and honorees truly exemplify what The National Jewish Sports Hall of Fame is all about,” said Lynne Kramer, Esq., Chairman of the Hall of Fame. “In their own way, each one of them have overcome adversities, challenged stereotypes and blazed a trail for others to follow. We hope by honoring these Jewish men and women for their accomplishments we can show young Jews that there are no limits for them.”
In addition to the inductions, a special award will be presented in recognition of the 1936 LIU Blackbirds basketball team. In 1936, the LIU Blackbirds took a bold stance by boycotting the Berlin Olympics. A favorite to represent the United States in those games, the team gave up the chance to win a medal and unanimously decided to protest the persecution of Jewish people in Nazi Germany by not participating.
