(New York, N.Y) The New York League of Conservation Voters, which works to make environmental sustainability a top political and policy priority in New York State, has announced its endorsement of Jay Schneiderman for Suffolk County Legislator in District 2.
A member of the County Legislature since 2004 and currently chair of the important Public Works & Transportation Committee, Schneiderman has a long record of championing environmental initiatives. He sponsored legislation to ban a harmful pesticide and better manage fertilizer use to keep toxins out of the local environment. Schneiderman has also supported the Sunday Bus pilot program and secured funding for two miles of sidewalk in Bridgehampton, thereby expanding sustainable transportation options in the county.
If re-elected, Schneiderman plans to reduce nitrogen pollution from runoff by tightening construction standards near surface waters. These standards will better protect not only Suffolk County harbors’ marine life, but also the shellfish in the Peconic Estuary. Advancing public transportation and sustainable development is also high on Schneiderman’s agenda. In addition, he is working on a pesticide reduction bill as well as legislation to prohibit methoprene in the Peconic Estuary
