New York City Council Announces Awards for Gun Violence Prevention Initiative
(New York, NY) – New Yorkers Against Gun Violence Education Fund, a 501(c) (3) organization, is pleased to receive funding from the New York City Council to continue its education work with New York City youth and community groups to prevent gun violence. Leah Gunn Barrett, NYAGV Executive Director, said, “Guns are one of the top three causes of death among American youth. When guns are easily accessible, teens are both the perpetrators and victims of gun violence. Our education programs teach teens how to solve problems without resorting to guns.”
NYAGV Education Fund programs emphasize personal responsibility and community engagement with a focus on peer education about gun violence prevention. NYAGV Education Fund works in schools in communities with high levels of gun violence. Many of the students in the programs have been personally affected. Barrett said, “Gun violence destroys not only the lives of the victims but also those of the families, friends, schools and communities. We are proud of the work we are doing to educate young people about ways to prevent gun violence so that they can have a better chance to lead more productive lives as individuals and as part of their communities.”
