(New York, NY) New Yorkers Against Gun Violence announced today its endorsement of New York State Assemblywoman Michelle Schimel (District 16) for re-election.
Leah Gunn Barrett, NYAGV Executive Director, said, “Assemblywoman Schimel’s leadership in the New York State Assembly has saved countless lives. Because of dedicated leaders like her our state has the fourth lowest gun death rate in the nation. Like us, she knows that smart gun laws work. We look forward to working with Assemblywoman Schimel in the upcoming legislative session to continue the tremendous progress New York has made to protect our citizens from the preventable scourge of gun violence. ”
During her career as a state legislator, Assemblywoman Schimel has introduced and voted for common sense legislation to reduce gun violence. Specifically, she:
- Voted for the landmark NY SAFE Act which gives New Yorkers some of the strongest protections against gun violence in the nation.

- Sponsored legislation to ensure that background checks are run on all employees of gun stores.
Schimel he also served as co-chair of State Legislators Against Illegal Guns (SLAIG), a group of state legislators that works to pass common sense gun legislation, which is a model for state legislatures across the country. In 2009, Schimel received NYAGV’s highest honor, the Allard K. Lowenstein Award for Public Service, which recognizes public officials who act to reduce gun violence.
