(Long Island, NY) New Yorkers Against Gun Violence announced today its endorsement of Congressman Tim Bishop for re-election (District 1).
Leah Gunn Barrett, NYAGV Executive Director, said, “Throughout his service in Congress, Tim Bishop has consistently backed reasonable measures like background checks on all gun sales to keep guns out of the hands of criminals, terrorists, domestic abusers and the seriously mentally ill. Background checks would cut down on the relentless flow of illegal guns trafficked into New York that end up killing and maiming our citizens. We know that background checks work which is why they are suppported by over 90% of Americans. Yet Tim’s opponent, who is firmly in the pocket of the corporate gun lobby, opposes them, deliberately putting New Yorkers at risk.”
Barrett continued, “In the current session, Tim has sponsored every major legislative proposal that would reduce our country’s unacceptably high level of gun violence, particularly towards women. A woman is five time more likely to be murdered if her abuser has a gun. That’s why he was one of the first co-sponsors of H.R. 4906, a bill that would prevent misdemeanant stalkers, dating partner abusers and those subject to temporary restraining orders from buying or possessing guns. We need Tim Bishop’s leadership in Congress.”
Congressman Bishop said, “I am so proud to receive the endorsement of New Yorkers Against Gun Violence, an organization committed to reducing gun violence through community outreach and smart policy. The recent tragedy in Washington State demonstrates, more than ever, the need for common sense gun reform that protects our families. I will always stand with this exceptional organization to combat gun violence.”
