(New York, NY) New Yorkers Against Gun Violence Political Action Committee today announced it is endorsing Bill de Blasio for NYC Mayor and Tom Suozzi for Nassau County Executive. Both candidates have demonstrated strong commitments to policies that reduce gun violence and make New York communities safer.
As a member of the New York City Council and as Public Advocate, Bill de Blasio supported strong gun safety laws such as microstamping and the New York SAFE Act. Most recently, he led efforts to encourage the divestment of public pension fund holdings in companies that manufacture military-style assault weapons and high capacity ammunition magazines for the civilian market. Leah Gunn Barrett, Executive Director of NYAGV said, “As Mayor, we are confident Bill de Blasio will continue his strong advocacy for gun safety and be a leader on this issue not only for New York City but also for the nation.”
“I’m honored to receive the endorsement of New Yorkers Against Gun Violence,” said Democratic mayoral nominee Bill de Blasio. “Through their legislative and grassroots efforts, NYAGV is an invaluable ally in the battle for common sense gun reform. I look forward to working with them to end the violence that plagues too many of our City’s neighborhoods.”
Under Tom Suozzi’s tenure as County Executive, Nassau County was ranked the safest place in the nation. Ms. Barrett said, “Tom Suozzi implemented innovative programs to reduce gun violence and solve gun crimes such as ShotSpotter and the Gun Stoppers hotline. The outstanding public safety results he achieved speak for themselves. Nassau County residents will be safer with him back at the helm.”
“Gun violence is an issue that crosses jurisdictions. As Nassau County Executive, I will work with local, state and federal officials to protect communities and stop senseless gun violence. We can’t let Tea Party Conservatives like Ed Mangano stand in the way of change,” said Nassau County Executive Candidate Tom Suozzi.
