(Lindenhurst, NY) With a life devoted to mending broken bones, replacing faulty joints, and easing the pain of thousands, noted orthopedic surgeon Dr. Harvey Manes is still going strong as he celebrates his 40th Anniversary in medicine.
A pioneer in joint replacement surgery and teacher of many physicians, Dr. Manes made his mark early when he became the youngest orthopedic surgeon ever to be board certified in the United States. A short time later, he performed the first total ankle and elbow replacement surgeries in the tri-state area.

“In those days, it was common practice to fuse faulty joints together leaving patients immobilized,” Dr. Manes explained. “Replacing these joints gave people complete freedom and changed their lives,” said the surgeon who recounted a patient who received two artificial ankles at the same time.
Maintaining an office in Lindenhurst since 1978 after getting his start at Brooklyn’s Downstate Medical Center, Dr. Manes served as a clinical instructor of orthopedic surgery for over 20 years and taught numerous resident physicians at Nassau County University Hospital.
High school and college athletes from throughout the region know him well as he treats all manners of sports injuries and many seniors have hailed him for easing their arthritis pain. In between, he specializes in arthroscopic surgery, a minimally invasive technique that spares patients from large incisions and long recoveries.
Dr. Manes is the author of more than a dozen medical articles, the most recent being, “The Prevalence of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome in Motorcyclists,” which was published in the journal Orthopedics. Last year, he penned a timely and well received book, “Dr. Harvey’s EZ Pain Relief Guide for Baby Boomers,” a work that covers the latest treatments for pain by traditional and alternative medicine.
Responding to patient requests for an effective pain ointment that didn’t come with a terrible smell, he developed Dr. Harvey’s Orthopedic Total Pain Relieving Cream, an odorless, herbal formula that he markets nationwide.
His friends and family-three daughters and a son-don’t know how he found the time, but Dr. Manes also earned a law degree from Hofstra University and, since 2008, manages the Manes-American Peace Prize, a philanthropic endeavor that provides millions of dollars to organizations such as the New York Botanical Gardens, Central Park Conservancy, Guardian Angels, and the Woodstock Museum, to name a few.
Attending the famed Woodstock Music and Art Fair in 1969, Dr. Manes saw how hundreds of thousands of young people could co-exist and live in peace.
“It was during the Woodstock era that I decided to dedicate myself to healing people and promoting peace in the world,” said the doctor, who is an avid collector of fine art and who, himself, creates sculptures from stone and other earth materials.
“I often think of Dr. Martin Luther King who said, ‘Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, What are you doing for others?'” Dr. Manes said. “Each day, I try to do the most that I can.”
