(New York City, NY) “New Yorkers Against Gun Violence respects political competition and looks forward to engaging with all candidates in this year’s gubernatorial race, but we are appalled by State Republican Party Chairman Cox’s stating that the Republican candidates should put ‘lead on the target of Andrew Cuomo’s administration,” said Executive Director Leah Gunn Barrett. “Guns and bullets are no laughing matter,” she added.
Barrett continued, “Sarah Palin placed a target on Representative Gabby Giffords with her crosshairs map in 2010 and Congresswoman Giffords was shot in January 2011. Public figures must be responsible with the language they use.”
Gun Violence is a national public health crisis, with people being injured and killed every single day in our communities. We would hope that our public officials recognize the seriousness of this crisis and look for common sense solutions rather than seek through irresponsible rhetoric to trivialize it.”
New Yorkers Against Gun Violence (NYAGV) is a statewide advocacy group working to reduce gun violence through advocacy and education designed to encourage action, influence public opinion and lead to policy change. With a primary focus on New York State, the organization also advocates at the local and national levels for sensible gun laws, policies and practices that protect New York state residents from gun violence.
