(Long Island, NY) New Yorkers Against Gun Violence (NYAGV) is proud to partner with BBH Barn, the internship program of Bartle Bogle Hegarty NY, on their #DisarmTheiPhone social media campaign.
Leah Gunn Barrett, NYAGV Executive Director, said, “Most Americans don’t think they can make a difference because they don’t own or carry a gun. But, the fact is, they do. It’s one that has taken root in our culture and our digital conversations: the gun emoji. As a symbolic gesture for stronger regulations to keep guns out of dangerous hands, we invite everyone to tweet Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, asking him to remove the gun emoji from all Apple products.”
Andrew Kang, one of the creators of the campaign at the BBH Barn Program said, “President Obama has recently stated that no real legislative action can be taken about gun accessibility unless the American public feels a sufficient sense of urgency. Our team wanted to amplify the voice of the American people through this initiative – to show that all Americans, gun owners and non-gun owners, have come together to demand that Congress act now to pass background checks on ALL gun sales.”
Barrett concluded, “Through gun shows and private sales which are not subject to background checks, Americans put guns in the hands of prohibited persons each and every day – and it’s 100% legal thanks to the corporate gun lobby that blocks even the most widely-supported reforms, like universal background checks. Let’s tell Apple to get rid of the virtual gun and publicly join our call for univeral background checks on all gun sales.”
The campaign is supported by a website, video, and Open Letter to Apple. For more information, go to:

The BBH Barn is an internship program where young creative professionals are given nine weeks to create a social media campaign for a cause they are passionate about. The program had created other initiatives such as Underheard in New York, empowering the city’s homeless by giving them phones and Twitter accounts, and Puppy Love, match-making abandoned dogs with potential owners on Tinder.
New Yorkers Against Gun Violence is a statewide advocacy group working to reduce gun violence through advocacy and education designed to encourage action, influence public opinion and lead to policy change. With a primary focus on New York State, the organization also advocates at the local and national levels for sensible gun laws, policies and practices that protect New York State residents from gun violence.
