(Queens, NY) Queens Borough President Melinda Katz will address a breakfast meeting of the Queens Council on the Arts on Tuesday, March 18th at 9am.
Borough President Katz will discuss her efforts to rebrand Queens as a major tourist destination that has diverse set of unique attractions that appeal to travelers from around in the world. She will also introduce her new Director of Cultural Affairs and Tourism, Nayelli Valencia, to the Council.
“One of my priorities as Borough President is to develop a cohesive branding that will attract tourists, business owners and new residents to Queens by showing them what makes our borough such a wonderful place to live, work and visit,” Borough President Katz said. “As my Director of Cultural Affairs and Tourism, Nayelli Valencia will be central to carrying out this branding campaign. She is especially qualified for this task and I am very happy to have her as part of my Borough Hall team”.
Ms. Valencia was previously the Director of Strategic Partnerships at Kupferberg Center for the Arts, Queens College and also worked as the Development Officer for the Louis Armstrong House Museum. For six years she worked at Queens Theatre in the Park starting as a coordinator and Manager of the Theatre’s internationally renowned Latino Cultural Festival. She also served as Director of Audience Development before being promoted to Associate Director where she worked on Development, Marketing and Programming initiatives. She has also served as a consultant for a number of organizations.
A native of Mexico, Ms. Valencia was a classically trained in ballet. She danced with the National Company of Dance of Mexico for five years prior to receiving a Juris Doctorate from the University of Valle De Mexico in Mexico City. Prior to moving to the United States, she was employed as an attorney for one of Mexico’s largest national steel companies, AHMSA.
