(Garden City, NY) This March, Adelphi University will, for the second time, participate in ReelAbilities: NY Disabilities Film Festival. Initiated in 2007, ReelAbilities features award-winning films made by and about people with different disabilities. The festival partners with more than 70 community, film, arts, government, disability, and educational organizations, to educate the public about the experiences of the disabled with the goal of creating a more understanding and accepting society. Adelphi will host two of the festival programs on Thursday, March 6, 2014 in the Adelphi University Performing Arts Center (AUPAC) Concert Hall, 1 South Avenue, Garden City, NY. Each program requires its own ticket.
Stand Clear of the Closing Doors.
The first begins at 6:30 p.m. with the animated short, A Life with Asperger’s, followed by the feature film, Cinemability. Introduced by actor, Teal Sherer, Cinemability is a documentary that explores the evolution of disability portrayals in film and television. Directed by Jenni Gold, the film includes footage from movies and television throughout the century as well as interviews with filmmakers, studio executives, film historians, and celebrities.
The second program begins at 8:30 p.m. with The Commute, a short film followed by the feature, Stand Clear of the Closing Doors, which follows the life of Ricky, a 13-year-old boy with autism who lives with his father, sister, and mother. After a confrontation with his mother one day, Ricky flees into the NYC subway system where he is forced to interact with the world and learn about himself. Following Stand Clear of the Closing Doors there will be a discussion with presenters from the Bridges to Adelphi program, the Asperger Syndrome and High Functioning Autism Association, Adelphi University Office of Disability Support Services and the College of Arts and Sciences.
