(Rockville Centre, NY) Saving energy, increased efficiency and conservation are all terms used to describe ways we can reduce our overall energy consumption. There are several reasons for why we would do this in our houses or businesses, but it boils down to two main items: to save money by reducing our electrical bill and lower the stress we put on the environment by using less energy.
As we head into the summer months and the peak use of electricity, the Village of Rockville Centre has some easy ways for residents and business owners to save money and help the environment.
- Inspect your home’s heating, ventilation and air conditioning system to make sure its operating at peak efficiency. Leaking ducts, for example, could reduce energy efficiency by up to 20%.
- Air conditioners should be sized properly to meet the needs. A too powerful unit only wastes energy and is less effective in reducing humidity.
- Clean air filters monthly for central air and window/wall units. Dirt and dust hinder airflow, reducing efficiency.
- Program your thermostat to give your air conditioner a break when no one is home.
- Invest in state-of-the-art air conditioners. Energy efficient units can cut long-term bills and you may be eligible for a federal tax credit.
- Close the blinds to block sunlight, especially south and west facing windows. Rooms get hotter without shades or curtains.
- Unplug gadgets like a cell phone charger. Standby power for appliances not in use typically accounts for 5% to 10% of residential electricity use.
“The Village is committed to finding ways to help our residents save money and stay comfortable all summer long,” said Paul Pallas, RVC Electric Department Superintendent. “Making even a few changes can help residents save on their annual energy bills.”
