(Long Island, NY) Sag Harbor Partnership announces Sag Harbor Walking Tours, an exciting new smartphone app for discovering the treasures, secrets, and history of Sag Harbor Village. This makes Sag Harbor the first town on Eastern Long island to have an app dedicated to its history and culture.
There’s a whole new way to experience Sag Harbor with the new SAG HARBOR WALKING TOURS APP for smartphones. This app features historical, literary, cultural, and other walking tours which will open residents’ and visitors’ eyes alike to the rich history, architecture, diversity and culture of Sag Harbor. There’s even a Kids’ Walking Tour, complete with a reward at the end for spotting 6 of the treasure hunt-like items featured on it.
The other tours currently available are a Literary Tour, with authors and their homes from the 1700s to the present; Eastville Community: Unique Diversity, which discusses the possibility of the presence of the Underground Railroad here in Sag Harbor as well as that area’s special cultural make-up; the Sag Harbor Historical Society Walking Tour, which highlights the rich vernacular architectural history of the area; Arts and Architecture Quarterly in conjunction with the Society for the Preservation of Long Island Antiquities Walking Tour with its exceptional wealth of information and beautiful photographs by Jeff Heatley; and the Sag Harbor Cultural District Walking Tour, which unites nine fine not-for-profit cultural institutions to offer an expanded experience of culture and education.
As Sag Harbor Partnership Board Member Nick Gazzolo says, “It often seems that our love of new technology is weakening our connection to the past. We want this app to strengthen it by putting as much of Sag Harbor’s culture and history as we can in the palm of your hand”.
Artist and Board Member April Gornik, who designed logos and worked on text for the app, adds, “The beauty of this app is that it will not only provide a great way to get people exploring the Village on foot and to experience its living history, but for people who may never get here, it will also serve as a virtual tour of our singular Village”.
The app is a project of the Sag Harbor Partnership, which is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the preservation and enhancement of the quality of life in Sag Harbor. The app is FREE and available from the Apple App Store/iTunes and Google Play for Android phones by simply searching: Sag Harbor Walking Tours.
The App includes colorful photographs taken by local photographers, old historical pictures, and will download quickly with a good internet connection. An audio element is being added with the help of actor/directors Emma Walton and Steve Hamilton. Future tours planned will include Whaling Captains and Their Families, Famous Women of Sag Harbor, and Sag Harbor in Wartime, which will include its participation from the Revolutionary War to the present.
