(Long Island, NY) The Senate Democratic Conference today forced a vote on legislation to decouple school district resources from the implementation of the controversial teacher evaluation system and provide increased funding for community schools.
Following unanimous opposition from the Senate Republicans, Senator George Latimer, ranking member of the Senate Education Committee, released the following statements:
“It is simply wrong for the Senate Republicans to reject this reasonable amendment; we cannot use our children’s education as a pawn to advance a political agenda. Our education system needs real reforms that are worked out on a bipartisan basis with input from parents, educators and stakeholders, rather than political mandates that only serve to demonize teachers and hold public school resources hostage. Linking essential state funds with teacher evaluations jeopardizes struggling school districts throughout New York State. The Senate Republicans put partisan politics ahead of New York students, instead of joining with Democrats to establish necessary reform.”
