Senator Espaillat Praises Settlement Between LG and Environmental Groups on Palisades Tower

(Long Island, NY) Today electronics giant LG and environmental groups in New York and New Jersey reached a settlement to reduce the size of the proposed LG tower by more than half.

The originally proposed 143 foot tower would have protruded high above the tree line, visible from the entire upper Manhattan water front. Under the agreement, which is subject to court and local approval, the building will be approximately 69 feet, and will not pierce the treeline.

“The view of the Palisades from upper Manhattan is an awe inspiring sight and has remained largely unspoiled since Henry Hudson’s voyage more than 400 years ago. A determined coalition of local environmental groups and elected officials were able to protect that view for what I hope will be the next 400 years,” State Senator Adriano Espaillat, who represents the upper Manhattan water front.

Senator Espaillat and other elected officials introduced a brief to the New Jersey court last year in objection to the size of the tower. The brief reads “one municipal board to defeat over a century of collaborative work and investment by New York and New Jersey citizens, legislators, and courts, as well as by the federal government, to preserve the historic Hudson River Palisades north of the George Washington Bridge.”
