(Brooklyn, NY) “Yesterday, July 29, Governor Cuomo signed the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) Restructuring bill into law.
This important legislation will create new oversight over LIPA, which in many ways was a prototype for unaccountable and non-transparent public authorities.
Under the old LIPA, Long Islanders had the most expensive energy costs in New York, the least transparent utility, poor customer service, inadequate infrastructure, and a largely dysfunctional management structure.

Senator Kevin Parker, Ranking Member of the Senate’s Committee on Energy and Telecommunications
Under the new LIPA created by the Governor’s legislation, in addition to a major step forward for good government, there are a host of new possibilities, which I believe will create positive change in Long Island’s energy utility.
As we were all shown by Superstorm Sandy, the people of Long Island deserved more from their utility than LIPA was able to give them.
As Ranking Member of the Senate’s Committee on Energy and Telecommunications, I am pleased to have had the opportunity to help bring to the Floor and pass, legislation that will give Long Islanders and residents of Breezy Point and the Rockaways what they deserve.”
