(Long Island, NY) After 56 years of providing sailing, fishing, racing and cruising opportunities for local residents of all ages, the Setauket Yacht Club is proud to announce that they will assume a name that better reflects their home port… Port Jefferson Yacht Club. This name change was voted with overwhelming approval by both the board and the general membership of the club. “We have been a part of the Port Jeff community for many years and it was time for us to embrace our ties with the local residents, businesses, and the wonderful harbor.” says John Ciarelli, Commodore. “We feel a special bond to the Village and wanted to reflect that in our name.”
This change is part of some recent improvements to the club’s offerings including the addition of a Special Activities Membership which is a reduced rate membership targeted towards folks who just have kayaks, paddle boards or canoes and want to have a place to store and launch them to enjoy the harbor. John adds “We want to be the portal for the enjoyment of the harbor for the greater Port Jeff and Brookhaven community. We provide a broad spectrum of waterfront activities including being the home of the Stony Brook University’s Sailing and Rowing teams.”
Inc. Village of Port Jefferson Mayor Margot Garant states, “I am more than thrilled with this name change as it recognizes and makes official the significance of the partnership the Village has with this yacht club and the people who make up its membership within our Harbor and waterfront. My deepest congratulations and sincere hope that this club will continue to grow and prosper now under the name “Port Jefferson.”
The club will continue to operate out of their present location on Surf Ave Pass Way just beyond the red Village Center building in the village of Port Jefferson within the township of Brookhaven. They will continue to offer their Summer Sailing Program, and transient moorings and facilities for visitors to the harbor.
