(Port Jefferson, NY) St. Charles Hospital has been accredited with the American College of Radiology’s (ACR) gold seal certification for Computed Tomography (CT), sometimes called CT scan. The ACR gold seal accreditation means that St. Charles has achieved the highest level of CT image quality and patient safety in accordance with ACRs Practice Guidelines and Technical Standards.
“CT Accreditation from the ACR illustrates our commitment to patient safety and state-of-the-art imaging technology within the context of providing compassionate care,” said Jim O’Connor, executive vice president/chief administrative officer, St. Charles. “Image quality is critical for diagnostic accuracy as well as for advanced, non-surgical procedures, including CT angiography testing for cardiac conditions.”
Lev Lubarsky, director, cardiac CT angiography (CCTA) program, St. Charles Hospital, explained, “CCTA specialists can detect the earliest stages of coronary artery disease (CAD), a blockage of the arteries which can lead to heart attack, by viewing high-quality CT scan images produced by the hospital’s 256-slice CT scanner.”
St. Charles Hospital’s 256-slice CT scanner operates with incredible speed and power to capture an image of the entire heart in just two beats, while reducing radiation doses up to 80 percent. Multiple images are later compiled to build a three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction of the human heart.
St. Charles Hospital achieves the ACRs gold standard accreditation following a $5 million dollar upgrade to the CT and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machines in 2012. St. Charles holds additional ACR gold seal accreditation for MRI, Mammography, Nuclear Medicine, and Ultrasound.
