(Long Island, NY) The following statement was released today by New York State Senate Co-Leader Dean Skelos:
I am encouraged that Governor Cuomo’s Executive Budget controls spending, cuts taxes and includes critical investments that will help the private sector create new jobs.
Working with the Governor, our partners in the Independent Democratic Conference, and members of the Assembly, we’ve enacted three consecutive early budgets and ended the dysfunction that once plagued Albany. We’ve spent less and eliminated a $10 billion deficit, enacted a property tax cap, rolled back the MTA payroll tax and put in place the lowest middle-class tax rates in 60 years.
To protect our gains we should pass a statutory spending cap that prevents future Legislatures and future Governors from spending more than taxpayers can afford. Let’s make the property tax cap and middle-class tax cuts we passed permanent, eliminate corporate taxes for all manufacturers, end the energy tax surcharge, do away with unnecessary regulations that hurt businesses, and invest in important education initiatives. In addition, we should work together to accelerate the proposed tax cuts to speed up the state’s job creation efforts and bring about much-needed relief even sooner.
I look forward to working with Senate Co-Leader Klein, Senate Finance Chairman John DeFrancisco and all the members of the Senate to put together another early and responsible budget that cuts taxes and creates new jobs – – giving hardworking families the future they want and deserve right here in New York.
