The decision to allow an ambitious, dedicated student who has completed law school and passed the bar exam, to obtain a law license regardless of immigration status is a powerful affirmation that the United States remains a nation of opportunity.
Sergio Garcia’s bravery for challenging the status quo, and determination in pursuing this freedom make him an inspiration for millions of Americans who have been waiting for comprehensive immigration reform with hope and frustration. His path from agricultural worker to attorney is a classic example of the American dream and should be celebrated.
As the New York State court system continues to deliberate over the virtually identical fate of Cesar Adrian Vargas, I urge our state’s officials to reach the same common-sense conclusion – that restricting members of our community from performing work they are qualified for is shameful and archaic policy.
