(Long Island, NY) Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory on Nov. 8 served as the keynote speaker at the annual post-election lunch hosted by the League of Women Voters of Suffolk County (LWVSC). Held this year at Harbor Crab Co. in Patchogue, the event celebrated LWVSC’s efforts to register, educate and engage voters in the months preceding the Nov. 3 general election.

“I was honored to discuss the Legislature’s recent accomplishments with the League of Women Voters, and I commend the organization for its tireless commitment to increasing voter engagement,” said Presiding Officer Gregory. “Democracy literally means ‘rule by the people,’ and a democratic system can only work when people participate. The Legislature and I look forward to our continued partnership with LWVSC as we work to make government more accessible to the people it serves.”
“LWVSC was honored to host Presiding Officer Gregory,” said Lisa Scott, the organization’s president. “Our members have closely followed the work of the Legislature for years, and we appreciated the insight that Presiding Officer Gregory offered on the current issues facing the county. We look forward to our continued dialogue with the Presiding Officer and his colleagues on both sides of the aisle as we work together to ensure an informed citizenry.”

Presiding Officer Gregory’s Chief of Staff Lora Gellerstein was also recognized at the event for her partnership with LWVSC in hosting two “Student Days” at the Legislature. Held in October, the day-long workshops included presentations by representatives from various county agencies, as well as simulated meetings of the Legislature in which students debated mock legislation.
LWVSC is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that encourages the informed and active participation of citizens in government. Five local leagues – in Brookhaven, Huntington, Smithtown, Shelter Island, and the Hamptons – collectively form the interleague LWVSC. In addition to registering hundreds of voters this year, the organization prepared signs that contained information about voting for placement on buses throughout Suffolk County.
