(Long Island, NY) County Executive Bellone, Legislator Tom Cilmi, US Fish and Wildlife and Suffolk Officials announce a much needed dredging project for Champlins Creek which widened the creek from 50 to 100 feet improving the navigational abilities for boaters in the area. In addition, Suffolk County worked in collaboration with US Fish and Wildlife to supply the sand and dredged material from the creek to assist the agency with the first phase of their saltmarsh resiliency project at Seatuck National Wildlife Refuge.
Nitrogen pollution is directly linked with the explosion of algal blooms that have covered Long Island’s river corridors and bays with a foamy, thick mat of slime. The nitrification of our waters is systematically destroying our critical marshlands, wetlands, and coastal vegetation. This project will help to restore the marshland at the Seatuck Refuge and provide stronger protection for the mainland during significant weather events.
