(Long Island, NY) Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory recently participated in a ride-along with the Suffolk County Police Department’s SAFE-T (Selective Alcohol Fatality Enforcement Task Force), part of New York State’s STOP-DWI program.
The Special Traffic Options Program for Driving While Intoxicated (STOP-DWI) is a comprehensive program designed specifically to reduce the number of alcohol-related traffic fatalities and injuries in New York State. SAFE-T operates out of the Suffolk County Highway Patrol Bureau and is exclusively funded by the STOP-DWI program. The SAFE-T unit consists of nine SCPD officers whose patrols are solely dedicated to DWI enforcement. These officers lead DWI enforcement training exercises countywide and generate hundreds of arrests per year.
“Being able to spend time with the SAFE-T unit and see them in action first-hand was an impressive experience,” said Presiding Officer Gregory. “The strategic efforts of these officers send a powerful message that drunk driving will not be tolerated in Suffolk County. The work the team does to keep our communities and roads safe is commendable.”
