Ms. Sims is the author of a memoir, Detour Before Midnight. In Mississippi in the 1960s she was a member of the youth branch of the NAACP under Medgar Evers. She was among a group of youthful civil rights activists sent out to test the waters of nonviolent protest in Mississippi. Subsequently, under the tutelage of Michael Schwerner, one of the three civil rights workers murdered in 1964, she joined CORE/COFO during Freedom Summer.
She will talk about the events of that historic summer and what has influenced her to lead a life seeking social justice.
This event is free and open to the public. For more information, call 516-741-7304.
