Team Up 4 Community concludes The Long Island $300K Sports Give Back Challenge with over 12,000 Youth Athletes Participating
(Long Island, NY) Recognizing that community service helps promote responsibility and character in young people, the W20 Foundation partnered with Met-Rx and NBTY Helping Hands in the “L.I. $300K Sports Give Back Challenge,” an interactive contest that challenged our Long Island Athletes to compete in service projects this past school year. This challenge encouraged community service among athletes between the ages of 6 and 24. The challenge successfully completed with submissions totaling 49,437 hours of community service work performed by over 12,000 athletes in over 250 community service projects. The value of their time served in the community is worth over $358,418 given back in service.
Since 2012, the W20 Foundation’s Team Up 4 Community Project has been running an innovative online platform that educates youth athletes about the importance of contributing to their communities and invites all athletes to engage in community service. The monthly photo and bi-annual video community service challenges give the athletes the opportunity to showcase their work and in turn they can strongly influence others to participate as well. Together we are creating a ripple effect of social responsibility.

A noteworthy example of the ripple effect the platform is making in our communities was with the Valley Stream North High School student athletes. These athletes received a grant for their volunteer work at the Mary Brennan INN in Hempstead during the TU4C Spring Challenge. The athletes took to heart the moving work they saw their competitors, Carle Place High
School Student Athletes, doing to help a local child in need. Valley Stream decided to use a portion of their grant money to also assist Victoria, a 2-year-old girl, in her medical treatments for her bleeding and platelet disorder.
Retired New York Islander Hockey Player Steve Webb created project Team Up 4 Community through his W20 Foundation. The Foundation is dedicated to promoting social responsibility and community giveback through athletics.
“Similar to athletics volunteering helps build character and self-esteem in young people while simultaneously helping make a difference in the lives of others,” said Steve Webb, W20 Foundation Founder.
Communities are the backbone of Long Island, and our neighborhood, organizations, teams, schools and athletes are joining together to collectively make a difference. The Team Up 4 Community Project builds and strengthens communities and individual characters by promoting social responsibility and community giveback.
About the W20 Foundation
The W20 Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that was started in 2007 by retired NY Islander Steve Webb. The Foundation is committed to creating an environment where our youth athletes and others want to partake in community service and surround themselves with other like-minded, positive people who care about social responsibility.
In 2011, the Foundation launched a project called Team Up 4 Community (TU4C). TU4C engages and empowers youth athletes and others to initiate community service projects through its online challenges. The platform also provides them with an interactive set of resources to advocate and promote their social responsibility amongst their peers, family, schools, organizations and communities. TU4C serves as a central hub and a launching pad to help develop new programs to meet athletes, organizations, and community needs.
About the NBTY Helping Hands
NBTY Helping Hands is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization initiated by NBTY, INC., a leading manufacturer and distributor of nutritional supplements worldwide.
For many years, NBTY has shared its success by supporting the local community through charitable contributions to worthy causes. With the formation of NBTY Helping Hands, they hope to make an even greater impact by providing much-needed funds to more people than ever before. NBTY Helping Hands is the only charity to bear the NBTY name. It is run solely by their very own associates who volunteer their time to continue in the NBTY tradition of giving. The Executive committee of NBTY Helping Hands carefully reviews each potential contribution recipient, ensuring that your contributions are put to the best possible use. NBTY Helping Hands raises the majority of its funds through the NBTY Golf Outing Classic.
Their Hope is to help those less fortunate or may need financial assistance or may be suffering from illness, trauma, poverty, abuse or abandonment. Our dream is to help as many as possible.
