(Long Island, NY) The Suffolk Y JCC will host a National Women’s History Month event on March 7, 2016 celebrating Jewish women in American history. The event will kick off a month of programs focusing on exceptional Jewish women in American history. The keynote speaker for the event will be Laura Lindenfeld, the newly appointed Director of the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science at Stony Brook University. Ms. Lindenfeld’s work draws inspiration from the idea that we, as a society, can make better, more informed decisions about how we shape our collective future. With a strong commitment to advancing the capacity of women leaders and bringing feminist thinking to leadership, Laura’s work focuses on how we can advance meaningful, productive interactions through more effective communication.
The day will also feature “Love, Loyalty and Liberty”, a performance by Gerri-Ann Frank Blum, former star of the Yiddish Art Theatre. Ms. Blum will, through storytelling, song and theatrics celebrate the lives and work of Rebecca Gratz, humanitarian and philanthropist; Emma Lazarus, the Voice of Liberty; and Lillian Wald, known as the Angel of Henry Street. An old fashioned deli luncheon will be offered before the performance and keynote address.
Following the kick-off event on March 7th, The SYJCC will present several other National Women’s History Month programs. These include:
- March 9th – a reading of “Simon and Sedef” by author Sheree Jeanes, along with an environmental discussion with The Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation (12:45pm)
- March 14th – a conversation with Huntington Town Councilwoman, Susan Berland (2 pm)
- March 21st – Queen Esther’s Masquerade Ball with the Vic Vincent Band (12:45pm)
