(Rockville Centre, NY) – Every year since 1963, May has been the month to appreciate and celebrate the vitality and aspirations of older adults and their contributions and achievements. Village of Rockville Centre Mayor proclaimed that the month of May will mark Older Americans month within the Village.
Village of Rockville Centre Mayor Francis X. Murray and fellow Board of Trustees present Dr. Cyd Charrow, DSW, Village of Rockville Centre’s Director of Senior Services along with other Sandel Center members with a Proclamation to mark Older Americans Month.
“While the Village of Rockville Centre provides services, support, and resources to older adults year-round, Older Americans Month is a great opportunity to show special appreciation,” commented Mayor Francis X. Murray. “We will continue to provide opportunities for elders to come together and share their experiences with one another, as well as with individuals of other generations.”
By providing a variety of services ranging from programs for homebound elderly to the nationally accredited Sandel Senior Center, the department’s mission is to maximize independence, life satisfaction and vital aging. On a daily basis, the Sandel Senior Center provides nutrition services; transportation; multiple exercise, cultural and educational classes; guest speakers; trips and special events. The department also coordinates an active network of Senior Volunteers – over 100 senior members – who perform a multitude of jobs at the Center and outside in the Rockville Centre community
This year’s Older Americans Month theme—“Unleash the Power of Age!”—emphasizing the important role of older adults. This May, communities across the nation will recognize older Americans as productive, active, and influential members of society.
“Older Americans Month celebrations acknowledge the value that older adults continue to bring to our communities by making an effort to applaud recent achievements of local elders and inviting them to share the activities they do to unleash the power of age,” stated Dr. Cyd Charrow, DSW, Village of Rockville Centre’s Director of Senior Services.
