(Long Island, NY) United States Congressman Peter King, Islip Supervisor Angie Carpenter and Councilman Steve Flotteron will join officials from the NYPD, along with the family of the late New York City Police Detective Tommy Merriweather to rename a Town of Islip street in his honor, Friday, June 26, 2015 at 12 PM. Detective Merriweather died at the age of 49 from Pancreatic Cancer caused by exposure to toxins at the World Trade Center site following the terrorist attacks on 9/11. Spur Drive North in Bay Shore, where he and his wife made their home and raised their family, will going forth be known as “Det. 1st Grade Tommy Merriweather Drive.”
Detective Merriweather was a true hometown hero, not only a distinguished member of the NYPD, but also a decorated member of the U.S. Army, and a Scoutmaster for Sagtikos District/Troop 43 of the Boy Scouts of America. Following his service in the Army’s Infantry Division, he joined the 77th Precinct of the NYPD and eventually earned the rank of Detective, where he worked on highly dangerous undercover cases. In 1999, Merriweather retired as Detective First Grade after 20 years on the force. Officials of the National Guard and Boy Scouts will also be attending the ceremony.
