(Long Island, NY) The Third Squad reports the details of two arrests at 3:39am on Monday, April 11, 2016 in Hempstead.
According to Detectives, Police Officers on patrol observed the two defendants fighting in the street in front of a residence on Fulton Avenue. As Officers made verbal commands for the defendants to stop, Officers observed what appeared to be a handgun in the pocket of one of the defendants. Officers recovered a loaded black colored Ruger 9mm handgun and a loaded magazine containing eight rounds.

Both defendants were taken into custody without incident.
No injuries were reported. Defendant Derek Belizaire, 34, of Bayshore is charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon 2nd and 3rd Degrees and Disorderly Conduct.
The investigation led to defendant Dominic Cowan, 36, of Roosevelt being charged with Robbery 3rd Degree, Aggravated Family Offense, Assault 3rd Degree, Criminal Mischief 4th Degree and Disorderly Conduct for a domestic incident that occurred in Hempstead at 3:20am involving a female victim, 38, of Hempstead.
The incident involved a verbal argument that escalated into the defendant assaulting the victim, breaking a telephone and taking the victims keys. The victim suffered bruising about her arms and body and a laceration to her left hand.
Defendants Belizaire and Cowan are being arraigned on Tuesday, April 12, 2016 in First District Court 99 Main Street Hempstead.
The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty. Defendants are entitled to a fair trial with the burden on the prosecution to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
