Academy Award-Winner Davis Guggenheim, the daring filmmaker behind the groundbreaking and controversial documentary “An Inconvenient Truth” returned once again to the screen with an in-depth investigative approach to the American public education system. Never one to beat around the bush, Guggenheim dives in head first into an ocean of unsolved problems and follows five young impressionable students Anthony, Francisco, Bianca, Daisy, and Emily to visualize how these bright young individuals are perceived and instructed by an institution that is supposedly encouraging their academic abilities. The film dismantles the complex issues surrounding the subject and circumstances that are perplexing our nation. Guggenheim delivers a well-balanced but brutally honest film that is already one of the most conversed films of the year.
Director and Co-Writer Davis Guggenheim is a critically acclaimed, Academy Award-Winning director and producer. His film accomplishments include “It Might Get Loud,” the 2009 documentary featuring Jimmy Page, The Edge and Jack White, and “An Inconvenient Truth” featuring former Vice President Al Gore which won the Oscar for Best Documentary in 2007. More recently, Guggenheim directed Barack Obama’s biographical film for the 2008 Democratic National Convention, as well as Obama’s 30-minute primetime infomercial. Guggenheim has also directed many television series including “Deadwood,” “NYPD Blue” and “24.”
Also in attendance at the screening was Superintendent Mr. Michael Comanda and Greenport Mayor David Nyce who both revealed their viewpoints about the importance of the film to me in a sit down interview.
After the reception I sat down and interviewed Owner Deborah R. Pittorino, owner and chef at Cuvée and The Greenporter Hotel about why she decided to sponsor such an event. During our conversation she discussed wanting to make a difference in her community by bringing awareness about the problems we are having in our education system today. Many of the interns she has hired in the past can’t write, E-mail or even articulate to get a message across. This is a very real and serious issue in our nation today.
Afterwards I was invited to dine at her elegant romantic restaurant, Cuvée Bistro and Bar.

The Greenporter Hotel’s restaurant, Cuvée Bistro and Bar offers an elegant array of fine dining featuring the delicious food and wines of the North Fork. Local ingredients that are homegrown and harvested on Long Island seasonally inspire the menu. Local seafood and organic produce are the foundation of Cuvée’s menu complimented by a wide selection of North Fork wines. I enjoyed the ambiance of dining fireside even though the temperature was a balmy 80 degrees.
Cuvée Bistro and Bar features forty-five wines by the glass and more than thirty other local and international wines by the bottle. During the seasonal summer months the restaurant is open for all meals seven days a week. During the cold winter months, the restaurant is open on Thursdays and Fridays for dinner. On Saturdays all meals are served and on Sundays breakfast is served until 11:00am.

On June 19th, Father’s Day, Actress Fran Drescher Hosted Cancer Schmancer Family Day At East Hampton Studio.
The family event featured entertainment, fun activities, live music, video games, face painting, bounce house, craft projects and viewing of U.S. Open Golf which will benefit the organization’s ‘We The Future’ youth initiative for prevention and healthy living. The much publicized event also honored host and owner of East Hampton Studios Michael Wudyka, as Father of the Year.
Actress Fran Drescher founded the organization Cancer Schmancer and is on a quest to bring awareness that early detection of this dreaded disease can save your life.
Ms. Drescher reveals “I am a uterine cancer survivor, but was misdiagnosed and mistreated for a peri-menopausal condition I didn’t have. My doctors told me I was experiencing symptoms because of a long list of reasons – I was too young, too thin, even eating too much spinach! I was prescribed hormones to treat the symptoms, but my doctors didn’t order the proper diagnostic tests. At the time, I didn’t know to ask why or why not, because I was just happy to be told I was too young for something! But finally after an endometrial biopsy, my greatest fear was confirmed; I had cancer. It took me two years and eight doctors before finally being told I had a gynecologic cancer.
I felt betrayed by not only by my own body, but the medical community. In 2002, I wrote Cancer Schmancer, to tell my story of survival so what happened to me wouldn’t happen to others.” Cancer still is the leading killer in the world. In the United States. One in three women and one in two men will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. Still there is hope. When cancer is found early 90% of people do survive. Every woman, regardless of age, race or socioeconomic background deserves to have the opportunity to survive.
Cancer Schmancer’s mission is catching cancer early. By shifting this nation’s focus from just searching for a cure to education, prevention and early detection, we can save lives today. By empowering ourselves and the women we love to become medical consumers; to listen to our bodies, ask the right questions of our doctors and seek second opinions, we can prevent cancer and, if we still end up with it, detect cancer in its earliest stages. At Cancer Schmancer, they aren’t reinventing the wheel; they are shedding light on a method that works to end mortality due to late stage diagnosis.
