Supporters at the CCOC office are asked to spell Chernobyl various times each day by numerous inquiring individuals throughout the United States. In 1986, a nuclear reactor exploded killing people instantly. At the time the government announced that the radioactive debris falling were actually snow, and cancer rates and birth defects skyrocketed; and yet, people are still asking how to spell Chernobyl.
Not only did the explosion cause a tremendous impact of a nuclear meltdown and global catastrophic reaction, people to this day are still suffering physically, emotionally, and financially.
On April 26, 1986 Chernobyl nuclear reactor four blew up, the result of a test gone seriously wrong. That incident marked the worst nuclear radiation the world has experienced. The years passed and, as the children of the Chernobyl region began to mature, the affects of the radiation became increasingly apparent.
By 1990, Chernobyl reached epidemic proportions. The earth, air and water cycled radioactivity through every part of the Chernobyl ecosystem; food, drinking water, and oxygen were and continue to be radioactive vehicles forcing its way into the bodies of innocent children. Immune systems were shattered; premature death became a grim reality. And yet, inquisitive people are still asking the same question, “How do you spell Chernobyl.”
The explosion released radioactive toxins into the atmosphere 126 different radioisotopes to be exact with half-lives that will last for generations to come. Radiation intensity at Chernobyl was 100 times greater than the radiation generated by the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima during World War 2.
In 1990, the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson established Chabad’s Children of Chernobyl (CCOC).
Their mission is to rescue the children of Chernobyl, and relocate them to Israel permanently, caring for them emotionally and physically. The CCOC staff and supporters have worked diligently and against tremendous odds to guarantee the children’s safety. CCOC is the only organization in the world to export children out of the contaminated areas permanently.

Temporary “cleansing vacations” from the contaminated region has increasingly helped but permanent evacuation is the only option for the most complete recoveries. CCOC understands that there are also children who cannot or will not leave the Chernobyl region for a variety of reasons; medicine, medical equipment, therapeutic aids, and other needed items are airlifted into the contaminated areas to help those who remain there. Additionally, CCOC has trained local medical practioners to specialize in radiation-induced illnesses and has created a mammography clinic to help combat the artificially high rates of breast cancer in the region.
Up to 60 sq. mi. of Soviet farmland is likely to remain severely contaminated for decades, unless steps are dramatically taken to remove the poisoned toxic topsoil. Reason: cesium 137 and strontium 90, two radioactive particles spewed by the blaze, decay very slowly. It could take decades for the ground to be free of them.
Together with the shorter-lived iodine 131, the substances promise to pose short- and long-term problems for people, crops and animals. Chemistry professor James Warf at the University of Southern California reveals ”I wouldn’t be surprised if the immediate area has to be evacuated for generations.” John Greenwald, Time Magazine, May 12, 1986.
Based on Belarus national cancer statistics, Greenpeace predicted that up to 270,000 cancers and 93,000 fatal cancer cases have been caused by Chernobyl. The report also estimated that 60,000 people have additionally died in Russia because of the Chernobyl accident, and estimates of the total death toll for the Ukraine and Belarus could reach another 140,000. The Greenpeace report said the incidence of cancer in Belarus had jumped 40 percent between 1990 and 2000.
CCOC holds an annual charity gala, Children at Heart, to raise funds for these flights. Last year’s event honored Steven Spielberg, fashion designer Elie Tahari, Judge Judy Sheindlin, and Robert and Amy Book.
This years event included Publicist R.Couri Hay, Supermodel Carol Alt, Fashion Designer Malan Breton and Fashion Designer Loris Diran.
