(Long Island, NY) East Meets West was the Extraordinary theme at this year’s East End Hospice Summer Gala. This highly anticipated event was glamorously held at the beautiful Sandacres Estate in Quogue with a guestlist` that topped over 600 supporters. The elegant evening included live entertainment, live and silent auctions, the delicious cuisine of celebrated chef Starr Boggs, and the thrill of casino gaming. More importantly the highlight of the evening was a special honoree award, The 10th Annual Dorothy Pell Savage Good Samaritan Award, was presented to DJ Carey.
Denis J. Carey III is the 2009 recipient of the Dorothy Pell Savage Good Award. Better known as “DJ” Carey has taken a very active role in the East End Hospice over the past 10 years and chaired this benefit in 2004 through 2006. DJ has been an asset to the gala committee and many of the donors who give year after year continue to because of his persuasive personality and dedication to East End Hospice. He is a beloved member of the East End Hospice Community. DJ was the recipient of the 2008 Jacob K. Javits Lifetime Achievement Award. He has a distinguished record of civic philanthropic and humanitarian service that includes working with the ALS Association’s Greater New York Chapter to mobilize public awareness and political support in the fight against Lou Gebrig’s Disease.

East End Hospice’s mission is to provide care and comfort for all terminally ill patients, their families and loved ones living on the North and South Forks of Long Island, including Brookhaven Township. Health care professionals and volunteers offer pain and symptoms control as well as palliative care, social, emotional and spiritual support to patients and their loved ones in the comfortable and caring environment. East End Hospice also seeks to promote awareness of the benefits of hospice care in our communities through educational and informational presentations to civic, fraternal and religious groups, professional organizations and educational institutions.
I had the chance to interview Gala Chairpersons Carol Lee Nespole and Nancy Sander who both stated, “No one shall be denied care by East End Hospice because of inability to pay. We are so honored to once again chair this summer’s benefit. As you may well imagine, this has been a most difficult year for East End Hospice. The downturn in the economy has drastically reduced government, as well as private funding for all our services. However, the need for physical, emotional and spiritual support has greatly increased It is through your dedication and support to East End Hospice that we know our commitments to patients and their families will be fulfilled.”

Once again former anchor of Fox 5 News, John Roland was Master of Ceremonies. Although he is a double Emmy Award winner and a three time nominee, John’s office wall is covered with awards and citations testifying to his concerns for others. John has been honored by civic groups and fraternal organizations including the 1974 Public Service Award from the American Federal Government Employees Association, the New York City Patrolman’s Benevolent Association Journalism Award in 1982; the Good Samaritan Award from the Bronx Chamber of Commerce in 1983 and numerous others.
