(Long Island, NY) The Seventh Squad reports the details of an assault that occurred at 3:50am on Sunday, November 15, 2015 in Wantagh.

According to Detectives, the male victim, 25, was walking in front of 3382 Park Avenue when he became involved in a verbal argument with a subject unknown to him. This subject was one of four males who then began to physically assault the male victim.

The victim fell to the floor sustaining contusions and a laceration to his head requiring sutures. The four subjects fled the scene on foot towards the train station.

The first male subject is described as a white male, medium build, approximately 20 years old, short black colored wavy hair, wearing a long sleeve blue plaid shirt, blue jeans and brown boots. The second male subject is described as a white male, medium build, approximately 18-20 years old, wearing a white and black knit cap, black colored sweatshirt, grey colored sweatpants and sneakers. No further description on the other two subjects.

Detectives request anyone with information regarding this crime to contact Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS. All callers will remain anonymous.

(Long Island, NY) Upon the conviction of former Speaker Sheldon Silver, Assemblyman Michael Montesano (R,I,C-Glen Head) and many of his colleagues in the Assembly Minority Conference are repeating their call to pass historic ethics reform measures in Albany.

“Following the long-awaited conviction of the former speaker, it is critical that we adopt meaningful and effective ethics reform in New York,” said Montesano. “There is no question that this year’s top priority must be to move forward with ethics reform measures to restore the trust of residents across New York State.”

Montesano and his colleagues in the Assembly Minority Conference have introduced ‘The Public Officers Accountability Act,’ which calls for term limits for legislative leaders and committee chairs, campaign finance and member-item reforms, removing pensions from convicted officials, and replacing the Joint Commission on Public Ethics (JCOPE) with a truly independent integrity panel.

“For years my colleagues and I have encouraged the legislature to adopt our all-encompassing ethics reform solution,” continued Montesano. “The Public Officers Accountability Act would eradicate the corruption that has wrongfully infiltrated the Capitol, while also preventing power hungry people from becoming long-term legislative leaders.”

As a member of the Assembly Ethics Committee and the Legislative Ethics Commission, Montesano has long called for increased transparency of the legislature in order to ultimately improve the process and ensure representatives are held to a higher standard.

(Long Island, NY) The U.S. House of Representatives is preparing to vote a second time since June to block climate action and clean air protections, advancing extreme legislation that no New York member of Congress can justify supporting.

Despite the harm climate change is causing Long Island, Reps. Lee Zeldin and Peter King sided with their majority colleagues to block the Clean Power Plan. Now, another vote is expected later today on an even more extreme effort which would immediately nullify the Clean Power Plan, and prevent further action until the Congress specifically directs the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to develop a climate plan.

The following statement is attributable to Peter Iwanowicz, executive director of Environmental Advocates of New York:

“World leaders are convening in Paris to plan global climate action. Instead of focusing on solutions, the House of Representatives is about to vote on an even more extreme, anti-science climate bill that prioritizes polluter profit over public health. Their goal is to thwart progress at the Paris climate summit, endangering people’s lives in the process.

Climate change has taken an enormous human and economic toll – that is only expected to get worse in the years ahead. New York is already ahead of schedule on meeting standards required under the Clean Power Plan thanks to the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI). There is no justification for any New York member of Congress to support this effort.

If Reps. Zeldin and King support this bill, they are placing the interests of western polluters over our public health here at home. We urge Reps. Zeldin and King to correct course, stop these attempted giveaways for industry, and oppose S.J. Res 23 and S.J. Res 24.”

Letter Sent To Reproductive Health Care Clinics In New York; Urges Individuals To Report Potential Violations Of Federal Or State Law That Ensure Patients And Staff Are Able To Freely Access These Clinics

(Long Island, NY) Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman sent a letter to reproductive health clinics in New York to underscore his office’s continued commitment to enforcement of the federal, state and local laws that ensure patient and staff access to facilities that provide reproductive health services across New York State.

The Attorney General’s office has taken action to protect reproductive rights in several areas. In 2012, the Attorney General secured a new court order which expanded a buffer zone against protesters at Utica Planned Parenthood facility.  In October, the Attorney General announced he is leading a coalition of a dozen states in filing a friend-of-the-court brief urging the U.S. Supreme Court to grant certiorari to review a federal appellate court decision upholding two provisions of Texas law that significantly restrict access to abortion services in that state.

“In light of last week’s horrific tragedy at a Planned Parenthood clinic in Colorado, we are committed to ensuring that all New Yorkers have full and safe access to necessary reproductive health care services,” *Attorney General Schneiderman* said. “I urge health care providers, their staff and community members to immediately report any potential violations of the law to my office.”

The new film by the great Philippe Garrel (Regular Lovers, Jealousy) is a close look at infidelity—not merely the fact of it, but the particular, divergent ways in which it’s experienced and understood by men and women. Stanislas Merhar and Clotilde Courau star as Pierre and Manon, a married couple working in fragile harmony on Pierre’s documentary film projects, the latest of which is a portrait of a Resistance fighter (Jean Pommier). When Pierre takes a lover (Lena Paugam), he feels entitled to do so, and he treats both wife and mistress with a disengagement bordering on disdain. However when Manon catches Pierre in the act, her immediate response is to find common ground with her husband. SUNation Continues to Offer Solarize Brookhaven Installation Savings Through End of 2015

(Long Island, NY) The first ‘Solarize Brookhaven’ solar project was recently installed by the Town of Brookhaven’s exclusive custom solar designer, SUNation Solar Systems of Oakdale, at the Centereach home of Brookhaven resident Linda Tong.

Ms. Tong is among 60 Brookhaven Town residents to have signed on for the Community Solar NY ‘Solarize Brookhaven’ program. It is expected that Ms. Tong’s solar system will offset over 100% of her annual consumption, saving her approximately $50,000 over the system’s lifetime. Ms. Tong, a Science teacher in the West Islip school district says, “This is a tremendous opportunity and I am very thankful to the Town of Brookhaven and SUNation. I am excited about adding solar to my home and saving money on my energy bill.”

“I am happy to congratulate Linda for being the first Solarize Brookhaven resident to power up, save money and help the environment,” said Town of Brookhaven Supervisor Ed Romaine. “This is another example of how the private and public sector can work together to benefit our residents.”

(Long Island, NY) The Fourth Squad is investigating a Fatal Vehicular Accident that occurred on Tuesday, December 01, 2015 at 12:00 am in North Valley Stream.

According to detectives, a 26 year old female victim was driving a 2005 Chrysler eastbound on Dutch Broadway at Valpark Avenue when she struck a light pole and then a tree.

Officers from Nassau County Police Department – Emergency Services Unit along with the Elmont Fire Department used the Jaws of Life to extricate the victim from the vehicle.

The victim was transported to Franklin General Hospital where she was pronounced deceased at 12:51 am by hospital staff.

The identification of the victim is being withheld pending family notification. This investigation is ongoing.

(Long Island, NY) Suffolk County Police Commissioner Edward Webber would like to offer safety tips for delivery workers and their employers who may be targeted by perpetrators looking for cash or goods.

The safety and security of residents is the department’s highest priority and while officers do their best to protect and serve, it is also important for people to be educated and armed with knowledge to protect themselves during a crime. Robberies of fast food delivery people are on pace to be down in 2015 with 15 through the first 11 months of the year compared to 20 for all of 2014. Because delivery drivers may find themselves vulnerable to criminals, the department is offering the following advice to drivers and owners of businesses:

• Ask for a call back number for customer and verify the number before delivery.
• Try to use a credit card only policy for all deliveries.
• Delivery vehicles should have a sign that indicates drivers do not carry cash.
• Allow drivers to wear regular clothes and not uniforms.
• Equip drivers with cell phones.
• Drivers should not carry weapons that could be used against them.
• Avoid late night deliveries.
• Never deliver to a home that looks vacant.
• Don’t flash money during transactions.

If you are a victim of a crime, remember the following tips:

• Remain calm and follow suspect’s instructions.
• Try to focus on suspect description, vehicle and plate number.
• Call 911 as soon as possible.

In addition to the above tips, it is critical for delivery drivers to follow their instincts. If you don’t feel safe, then call for assistance.

A male and female entered Sears, located in the Smith Haven Mall, and stole a bicycle on November 12. The two fled in a black Jeep Wrangler. The bicycle had a value of approximately $200.
