(Long Island, NY) The Homicide Squad reports the details of a Fatal Vehicular Accident which occurred on Friday, August 21, 2015 at 10:20 P.M. in Oyster Bay.

According to detectives, Patricia White, 64, of Oyster Bay, was walking to her vehicle which was parked on the east side of Pine Hollow Road in the vicinity of 129 when she was struck by a 2014 Jeep which was being driven southbound by a female, 26 years of age.

White was transported by Oyster Bay Fire Department to Nassau University Medical Center where she was pronounced deceased at 11:16 P.M. by hospital staff.

Brake and safety checks were conducted at the scene. No criminality is suspected at this time.

(Long Island, NY) Suffolk County Crime Stoppers and Suffolk County Police Fourth Squad detectives are seeking the public’s help to identify and locate the man who used a stolen credit card at a store in Shirley last month.

A man entered Home Depot, located at 399 William Floyd Parkway, and used a stolen credit card to purchase a gift certificate on July 29 at 8:31 p.m.

Suffolk County Crime Stoppers offers a cash reward of up to $5,000 for information that leads to an arrest. Anyone with information about this crime is asked to call anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS. All calls will be kept confidential.

(Long Island, NY) Suffolk County Police Fifth Squad detectives are investigating a crash that seriously injured a pedestrian in Oakdale on Friday, August 21.

John Finn, 75, was driving his 2007 Kia Sedona westbound on Montauk Highway, near Dale Drive in Oakdale, when his vehicle struck a pedestrian who was walking in the roadway at approximately 10:20 p.m.

The pedestrian, Jesus Castro, 80, of Sayville, was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital via Suffolk County Police helicopter where he was listed in serious condition. Finn, of Oakdale, was not injured.

Detectives are asking anyone who may have witnessed this crash to call the Fifth Squad at 631-854-8552.

The investigation is continuing.

(Long Island, NY) Suffolk County Police Second Squad detectives are investigating a motorcycle crash that seriously injured a Huntington man on Friday, August 21.

Joseph Alyward, 44, of Greenlawn, was operating a 2012 Harley Davidson Legend east on Little Plains Road, when he apparently lost control of the bike near Hillock Court in Elwood at approximately 6:30 p.m. The man, who was wearing a helmet, struck his head on a curb.

Alyward was transported to Stony Brook via Suffolk County Police Helicopter where he was in critical condition.

There do not appear to be any other vehicles involved in the crash. Detectives ask anyone who may have witnessed this crash to call the Second Squad at 631-854-8252.

The investigation is continuing.

(Long Island, NY) Major Case Bureau detectives report the arrest of a Lawrenceville, Georgia woman on Thursday, August 20, 2105 at 7:30 am.

According to detectives, Jasmine Sanchez, 33, while employed as an account representative for Winthrop Hospital and operating out of 700 Hicksville Road, Bethpage, accessed and did take patients personal information including Social Security numbers and Credit Card information.

A joint effort with the New York City Police Department’s Computer Section as well as the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office led to the arrest of Sanchez who surrendered herself to the Major Case Bureaus Crimes Against Property Squad.

A search warrant that was executed at a residence in Brentwood, where the defendant was staying, led to the recovery of a spiral notebook with handwritten personal information on eleven patients.

Sanchez is charged with nine (9) counts of Unlawful Possession of Personal Identification Information 3rd Degree. She was arraigned in First District Court, Hempstead on 08/20/2015.

The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty. Defendants are entitled to a fair trial with the burden on the prosecution to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

(Long Island, NY) The Second Squad is investigating a Robbery that occurred on Thursday, August 20, 2015 at 9:00 p.m. in Hicksville.

According to detectives, a male black subject, approximately 30-35 years of age, 5’10”, wearing a white tee shirt, black hooded sweatshirt, black pants, a black baseball hat and black ski mask entered the PETCO located at 265 N. Broadway at 9:00 p.m. armed with a black handgun.

Using plastic toy handcuffs he secured three employees, 2 females and a male, in the back office and removed an undetermined amount of U.S. currency from a safe. The subject fled in an unknown direction.  The employees were able to break free and call police. There were no injuries reported.

National Senior Citizens Day Observed Aug. 21

(Long Island, NY) In recognition of National Senior Citizens Day, observed annually on Aug. 21, Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory today reminds seniors of available services provided by the Suffolk County Office for the Aging, municipal governments and local nonprofits.

“Our parents and grandparents fought wars, raised children and built our economy,” said Presiding Officer Gregory. “Approximately one-fifth of Suffolk County’s population is over the age of 60. Today we thank them for the significant contributions they have given to our communities and remind them of the services that their communities can give back to them.”

Senior Advocates, who offer counseling on programs and services for people 60 and older, are available at more than 50 sites throughout Suffolk County. For the schedule and list of sites, visit the Office for the Aging website or call 631-853-8200.

More than 30 senior nutrition programs are offered to eligible seniors throughout Suffolk County. Options include both home delivery and congregate locations at which seniors can socialize. Free senior citizen ID cards are available to Suffolk County residents who are 60 and older. (Long Island, NY) The Art League of Long Island is proud to showcase artwork created by their highly talented visual arts instructors.  Their work will be exhibited in the Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery August 29 to September 20.  An open house and public artists’ reception takes place August 29, from 11am to 3pm.  The event is free and open to the general public.

The open house offers visitors a close-up view of what goes on in the Art League’s specialized art studios where live demonstrations by Art League instructors cater to students of all ages. On the lineup for art demonstrations are Jahn Guarino (watercolor), Peter Messina (jewelry making using Repoussé method), Lisa Mintz (ceramics) Irene Vitale (charcoal drawing), Suzanne Young (pastel), Anu Annam (watercolor), Bart DeCeglie (oil painting), Donna Harlow Moraff (pastel), Kelly Schulte-Smith (stained glass), and Joel Spector (pastel).

Meet the instructors and learn about their classes at the artists’ reception in the Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery. In addition to the exhibit in the main gallery, works created by teens in the Summer Portfolio Development program will be on view in the League’s Strolling Gallery. Also at the reception will be light snacks and refreshments.

The Art League offers more than 250 visual arts classes in a large variety of mediums to adults, teens, and kids ages five and up.  Classes, workshops, and open studios are offered to beginner, intermediate, and advanced students year-round, in the mornings, afternoons, evenings, and weekends.  Also available are workshops for individuals with developmental disabilities, traumatic brain injuries, and at-risk teens.

(Long Island, NY) On Monday, September 14, the Oyster Bay Historical Society welcomes Amy Verone for a PowerPoint presentation revealing the top ten acquisitions to the storied collections at Sagamore Hill National Historic Site. Ms. Verone, Chief of Cultural Resources, is retiring this fall after twenty-five years of service to the site. A question-and-answer session, with light refreshments, will follow the evening’s presentation.
