(Long Island, NY) Seventh Precinct officers report the details of a childbirth that occurred on Wednesday, July 29, 2015 at 1:20 am in Massapequa.

According to officers, a 911 call was received and dispatched for a 30 year old female who collapsed on the floor in labor at a Hamilton Avenue home. Upon arrival, along with a Nassau County Police Department Ambulance Medical Technician, it was determined that childbirth was imminent.

During the delivery of the female infant, the umbilical cord was wrapped around her neck; she was not breathing and had a weak pulse. After suctioning the baby’s mouth she began breathing on her own and established a healthy color.

Both mother and baby were transported to a local hospital where they are reported to be doing fine.

(Long Island, NY) Third Squad detectives are investigating an incident that occurred on Wednesday, July 8, 2015 at 6:30 pm in Westbury.

According to detectives, a 33 year old male victim responded to a “Craig’s List” advertisement regarding the sale of a 2012 Honda Civic. An arrangement was made with the sellers, who claimed to be the owners, to meet the victim at his house where the eventual sale was conducted for $8000.00.

The victim, at a later date, after attempting to register the vehicle at the Department of Motor Vehicles, was alerted to the fact that the car he purchased was in fact a stolen vehicle.

During the sale of the vehicle, the victim, utilizing his cell phone, captured a video and photos of the subjects involved in the illegitimate sale of the car.

Detectives are seeking to identify the subjects involved in this case and request anyone with information, regarding this incident or the identity of the subjects involved, to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS. All callers will remain anonymous.

(Long Island, NY) Suffolk County Crime Stoppers and Suffolk County Police Fourth Squad detectives are seeking the public’s help to identify and locate the woman who used stolen credits cards at multiple locations earlier this year.

Multiple credit cards were stolen from a woman’s wallet in East Northport in May and a woman used or attempted to use them for purchases at Target, located at 4 Henry St. in Commack, Shell gas station, located at 700 Commack Road in Commack, and Panera Bread, located at 165 Old Country Road in Carle Place, on May 14.

Suffolk County Crime Stoppers offers a cash reward of up to $5,000 for information that leads to an arrest. Anyone with information about this crime is asked to call anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS. All calls will be kept confidential.

(Long Island, NY) Major Case Bureau detectives report the arrest of a Freeport man for an Assault that occurred on Friday, July 10, 2015 at 3:31 pm in Freeport.

According to detectives, while sitting in front of his home on with a friend, the 23 year old male victim was approached by Jose Rodriguez, 26, a person with whom he has had an ongoing disagreement with.

Rodriguez, who was concealing a box cutter in his hand, put it up to the victims face and slashed him from his cheek to his chin causing a deep laceration. Rodriguez then fled the scene on foot.

The victim was transported to an area hospital where he received 60 stitches from a plastic surgeon to treat his wound.

After being contacted by investigating detectives, Rodriguez, on Tuesday, July 28, 2015, turned himself into the First Precinct where he was placed under arrest.

The defendant is charged with two (2) counts of Assault 1st Degree and Criminal Possession of a Weapon 3rd Degree. He will be arraigned in First District Court, Hempstead on 07/29/2015.

The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty. Defendants are entitled to a fair trial with the burden on the prosecution to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

(Long Island, NY) The Suffolk County Legislature today unanimously adopted “Framework for the Future – Suffolk County Comprehensive Master Plan 2035,” the first effort to create a master planning document for the county in more than 40 years.

The need for the plan was recognized in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, when the county found its vulnerabilities exposed, yet its resilience affirmed. Spearheaded by the Suffolk County Planning Commission, chaired by David Calone, the document was created in partnership with the Suffolk County Economic Development and Planning Department. The plan focuses on six critical countywide priorities: economic development, environmental protection, housing diversity, transportation, energy and public safety. The plan lays out overarching objectives for each priority and recommends actions that will help achieve those objectives.

“This bold plan recognizes the interdependent relationship between the economy and all other factors that contribute to our quality of life here on Long Island. Without convenient transportation, affordable housing, safe neighborhoods and a sound environment, Suffolk County cannot attract new jobs and retain young talent,” said Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory. “The future demands our attention now, and this forward-looking plan aggressively addresses the challenges of the 21st century. The Legislature and I look forward to our continued work with the County Executive as we build on this framework for a stronger Suffolk.”

Specifically, the plan recommends that the county provide incentives to spur the creation of mixed-use communities, which will serve as walkable, transit-friendly development hubs, to be built around Long Island Rail Road stations. These communities, according to the plan, should be connected to regional job centers by mass transit. Additionally, the plan also recommends expanding bus, bicycle, and pedestrian networks; rehabilitating bank-owned “zombie properties”; protecting our water by establishing goals for nitrogen levels; maintaining the county’s longstanding commitment to open space and farmland preservation; and attracting tourism and targeted business sectors through marketing campaigns.

“On an island like ours, how we use our limited land is a reflection of our values, our expectations and our goals,” said David Calone, chairman of the Suffolk County Planning Commission. “The purpose of Suffolk County 2035 is to create a strategic plan for our county by determining where we are as a region and where we want to be.”

“Our County has profoundly changed in the decades since the last planning vision for Suffolk was developed over four decades ago,” said 5th District Legislator Kara Hahn, chairwoman of the Environment, Planning and Agriculture Committee. “Time has seen the County transformed from its fishing and farming origins to a suburb in its infancy. Now, as Suffolk finds itself entering its next stage of development, the vision adopted today will thoughtfully guide our tomorrows. I commend the work of the Suffolk County Planning Commission and the Suffolk County Economic Development and Planning Department, and I look forward to leading our committee’s ongoing efforts to ensure the goals of this plan are realized.”

(Long Island, NY) The Major Case Bureau reports the arrest of an Elmont woman for Grand Larceny that occurred in Mineola.

According to the Crimes Against Property detectives, Stephanie A. Amit, 25, was employed as a secretary/bookkeeper for the law firm Guiliano, McDonnell & Perrone, LLC located at 170 Old Country Road.

Beginning in March 2015 until July 2015 Amit created eight checks, in excess of $11,000, payable to cash and deposited them in her TD Bank account. She also made false entries into the business records indicating the checks were paid to vendors.

Amit was located at her residence on Tuesday, July 28, 2015 at 7:50 a.m. and placed under arrest.

Amit is charged with Grand Larceny 3rd degree and Falsifying Business Records 1st degree she will be arraigned on Tuesday, July 28, 2015 at First District Court in Hempstead.

New York State Chapter of American Institute of Architects Recognizes LTL Architects for its Transit-Oriented Design for Westbury, Long Island

(Long Island, NY) The New York State chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) has honoredLTL Architects, based in New York City, with a Citation for Urban Planning/Design for the firm’s Train Terraces design for the Village of Westbury on Long Island. The Citation was announced as part of the AIA New York State Design Awards, which recognize outstanding works of design by architects based in New York State.

The design emerged from the Long Island Index’s ParkingPLUS Design Challenge, which conducted a national search for architects to contribute transformative thinking about parking structures in suburban downtowns. The Challenge paired each of four selected firms with a participating Long Island community to envision the potential of a particular transit-oriented site. LTL Architects was paired with the Village of Westbury.

The ParkingPLUS Design Challenge revealed new concepts of parking design that incorporate needed local amenities and make parking facilities an architectural attraction for downtown areas. Over an intense six-week design period, the architects were challenged to explore the premise that good design of public facilities – in this case “boring” parking garages – can be economically, environmentally and socially transformative to their settings. They were also asked to envision “PLUSes” – additional uses that would enliven these structures, provide amenities for their respective locations and suggest potential financing strategies for maintenance and operation of parking.

In its Train Terraces design, LTL Architects proposed, on two lots flanking the elevated train station platform, urban incubators for sustainable architecture in the form of elegantly designed, mixed-use, infill projects with multiple terraces that bridge over, under and along the tracks, continuing their award-winning design investigations into “new suburbanism.”

“We’re very pleased that the New York State AIA chapter has honored LTL Architects for its ParkingPLUS design,” said Nancy Rauch Douzinas, President of the Rauch Foundation, publisher of the Long Island Index. “We hope that this recognition will inspire further creative thinking around parking garages and the extraordinary opportunity that they offer to provide community amenities and compelling design in addition to their fundamental purpose.”

Third annual collaboration – This year’s theme: Time Travel

(Long Island, NY) Creative writing students ages 12 to 16 from Long Island¹s Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts, the acclaimed summer arts day camp whose alumni include Natalie Portman, Mariah Carey, Jane Monheit, Taylor Dayne, Jackie Hoffman and Broadway playwright Michele Lowe, have joined for the third season with students of the same age from the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) Summer Youth Program in a unique two-week joint workshop through July 31.  The project, which includes study at both Long Island¹s Usdan Center and BAM, will result in the cooperative creation of a new dramatic work, to be performed Thursday and Friday, July 30 at 1 PM at Usdan Center¹s McKinley Ampitheater and July 31 at 1:30 PM at the BAM Fisher space in Brooklyn, by both the students and professional actors at both venues in the final days of the workshop.

The theme for this year’s work is Time Travel:  entertaining the possibilities of what the writer would do — or not do — in terms of world history and personal events if it were feasible to actually go back or forward in time … but also actively exploring our individual and collective pasts and creatively envisioning the multiple possibilities for our futures through the Time Machines that are Memory, Fear, Hope and Imagination.

The workshop debuted two summers ago in a one-week version, which resulted in a cooperatively produced work at the BAM Fisher Space, called War and What To Tell You, exploring issues around war.   Last year¹s theme was Family.  The resulting performances were given staged readings at Usdan and at the BAM Fisher.

Andrew Copper, Associate Executive Director of Usdan Center and Usdan¹s coordinator of the project, says “Usdan Center is delighted to work once again with BAM in this unique process. It has become a thrillingly creative journey for the students, and we look forward to their latest work.²

The workshop will be co-directed by Usdan¹s David Surface, who returns from last year, and by BAM teaching artist Todd Woodard.

David Surface is instructor of the creative writing major program at Usdan Center for Performing and Creative Arts. He is a teaching artist for Teachers & Writers Collaborative and ArtsWestchester and leads writing residencies in public and private schools throughout New York City and Westchester County. He is founder and director of the Veterans Writing Workshop which partners with Fordham University, Common Ground, and Jericho Project to provide free writing workshops for U.S. veterans and their families in the NY-Metropolitan area. David also works as a resident teaching artist in the mental health field, leading therapeutic writing programs in mental health facilities, rehab programs, and homeless residences. David’s stories have been published in Doubletake, North American Review, and Crazyhorse. He is a recipient of a non-fiction literature fellowship from the New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) and was a nominee for the NYFA Prize.

The BAM co-director is Todd Woodard, an actor, writer, and theater arts educator who creatively engages public school students of all ages in theater performance, learning through drama, and writing projects throughout the New York City area. In addition to his work with with BAM, Woodard also works as a teaching artist with numerous other leading organizations including Lincoln Center Theater, Metropolitan Opera Guild, DreamYard, and the Center for Arts Education. He trained with Atlantic Theater Company and Terry Schreiber, graduated English Valedictorian from University of Rochester, and holds a master’s degree in educational theatre from the City College of New York.

The Brooklyn Academy of Music¹s mission is to be the home for adventurous artists, audiences, and ideas. America¹s oldest performing arts institution, it is recognized internationally for innovative dance, music, and theater programming‹including its renowned Next Wave Festival. Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts opened its 48th season on June 29th.
