(Long Island, NY) Suffolk County Police today arrested a Selden man for driving while intoxicated after he was involved in a wrong-way motor vehicle crash that seriously injured two people.
Pedro Hernandez was driving a gray 2000 Toyota Camry eastbound in the westbound lanes of Route 347 in Smithtown when his vehicle struck a red 2006 Toyota Corolla head on at approximately 5:30 a.m. The Corolla’s driver, Reyna Pena, 52, and her passenger, Lorenzo Rodriguez, 53, were both transported and admitted to Stony Brook University Hospital with serious injuries.

Hernandez, 24, of 394 Dare Road, was also transported to Stony Brook University Hospital where he was admitted with non-life-threatening injuries. Vehicular Crime Unit detectives charged Hernandez with Driving While Intoxicated and he will be arraigned at a later date.

The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty. Defendants are entitled to a fair trial with the burden on the prosecution to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
