(WANTAGH) The Nassau County Police Department has reported details of a vehicular accident which occurred on Saturday, March 01, 2014 at 12:03 A.M. in Wantagh.

According to Seventh Precinct police, a Wantagh man, 41, crashed a 2002 Chevrolet Suburban into a home located at 2666 Riverside Drive causing significant damage.

The male homeowner, 39, was inside at the time with a female, 29, and a child. None of the occupants were injured. The driver of the vehicle suffered non-life threatening injuries consisting of lacerations and contusions and was transported to an area hospital for treatment.

There is no criminality suspected at this time.

MINEOLA, NY – For the First time in over two decades, the Village of Mineola will honor the Portuguese community and its heritage by hosting the 1st ANNUAL LONG ISLAND PORTUGAL DAY PARADE on Sunday June 8th, 2014. The Parade will be organized by the Portuguese Heritage Society – Lusitano and coordinated by philanthropist Rosa Leal & the Daughters of Portugal.

The parade is expected to stretch 1.5 miles long and will assemble at 10am on Jackson Ave (behind Chaminade High School) and start at 11am in front of the Mineola Portuguese Center. Attendees will march down Jericho Turnpike to Roslyn Road, head south to Westbury Avenue, turn East to Union Avenue and end at Wilson Park during the Annual Portuguese American Feast & Carnival.

The historic intersection of Jericho Turnpike, home to the Mineola Portuguese Center, and Willis Avenue, home to the Portuguese Heritage Society-Lusitano and Alheirense Cultural Center, will be an emotionally symbolic juncture during the parade for many in the community.

Selection of the Grand Marshall was entrusted to attendees at the Long Island Portuguese American Leadership Conference, held this week in the Portuguese American Center of Suffolk, Farmingville. No child in the community younger than 21 has ever seen a Portuguese-themed parade on Long Island, and therefore, the community unanimously bestowed this year’s Grand Marshall honor upon “The Children of the Community,” in “recognition of the importance of the youth in the preservation of the community’s culture and ideals.” One child representing each local organization will walk alongside a list of Honorary Marshalls that include New York State Senator Jack Martins, County Executive Ed Mangano, County Comptroller George Maragos, County Deputy Presiding Officer Richard Nicolello, Mineola Mayor Scott Strauss, Deputy Mayor Paul Pereira and Trustees Dennis Walsh, Paul Cusato & George Durham, among others.

Special St. Patrick’s Day Event To Raise Awareness And Promote Adoption For The Misunderstood Breed

(Port Jefferson Station, NY) Save-A-Pet Animal Rescue and Adoption Center, Inc. will be holding its fourth annual “St. Pitty’s Day” Party on Sunday, March 16, at the shelter, which is located at 608 Route 112 in Port Jefferson Station from 12:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m.  For a $10 donation, guests will enjoy authentic Irish cuisine and get the opportunity to meet the sweet and playful pit bulls of Save-A-Pet that are all available for adoption!

The annual event, which began in 2010, was created to raise awareness and promote adoption for the misunderstood breed. This year, attendees will enjoy a wide array of Irish specialties, including corned beef and cabbage, Irish soda bread, several desserts, and beverages. The lovable pit bulls of Save-A-Pet will be joining guests for the festive activities. Throughout the event, all pit bull adoptions will be free. For the convenience of potential adopters, each pit bull has been spayed, neutered, vaccinated, heartworm tested, and microchipped.

Jada, known as the best pit bull in the entire world, is a medium-sized female pit bull terrier that is in need of a loving home after a tragic car accident that damaged her jaw. After surgery, she is now able to eat and drink, but she still has a crooked jaw. Consider adopting sweet Jada to comfort her during her time of need. Lady Rebecca is another gentle pit bull that is seeking a compassionate family. She had been diagnosed with mast cell cancer in the past, from which she almost lost her life. They are adorable, adult gray-and-white pit bulls that are looking for affectionate, caring families.

Crews and Equipment Ready to Serve

(Uniondale, NY) PSEG Long Island is preparing for more winter weather that is expected to bring snow late Sunday into Monday morning, according to current weather forecasts.

In preparation for the upcoming weather, PSEG Long Island is performing system checks on critical transmission & distribution equipment, arranging for contractors, including tree crews, to assist the utility’s own skilled workforce if necessary, performing logistics checks – ensuring availability of critical materials, fuel and other supplies and coordinating with county and municipal emergency management personnel to inform them of the preparation work, what to expect and how the utility will respond.

PSEG Long Island will have personnel on hand to deal with any weather-related outages due to heavy snowfall expected to affect our service territory.

While snow usually isn’t an issue for utilities, the possibility of sleet and ice can increase the likelihood of downed wires and resulting power outages. Vehicles striking utility poles can also cause wires to come down.

DOWNED POWER LINES

Accumulation of ice and heavy snow may weigh down power lines and as a result cause power lines to come down. Downed wires may appear dead but should always be considered “live.” STAY AWAY FROM ALL DOWNED LINES. Do not approach or drive over a downed line and do not touch anything that it might be in contact with. Parents are urged to check for downed wires in areas where their children might play and to remind the children to stay far away from any wires. If a wire falls on a vehicle, passengers should stay in the vehicle until help arrives. To report a downed wire, call 1-800-490-0075 and tell PSEG Long Island the nearest cross street.

IF YOU LOSE POWER

First check your neighborhood. If you are the only one without power, check your fuse box for tripped circuit breakers or blown fuses. If that’s not the problem, look outside at the wire between your house and the utility pole. If it is down, report it immediately to PSEG Long Island.

To report downed wires or power outages, customers should call PSEG Long Island’s Customer Service line at 1-800-490-0075. PSEG Long Island uses an automated system to handle customer calls as efficiently as possible. Customers who get an automated response when calling PSEG Long Island are encouraged to use it, as it is designed to route their calls to the right destination. If you have specific information regarding damage to wires, transformers or poles, PSEG Long Island asks that you stay on the line to speak with a representative to provide that information.

Please slow down and be alert when driving past a PSEG Long Island roadwork jobsite, especially in snowy, icy weather. Driving too fast can endanger employees and hamper their ability to perform important work. PSEG Long Island crews use work area protection – traffic cones, utility work signs and flaggers – to protect them and to allow them to do their jobs safely. Follow safe driving techniques to prevent fender-benders or more serious collisions that could delay our service technicians as they respond to customer calls or emergencies.

CUSTOMERS WITH LIFE-SUSTAINING EQUIPMENT

Individuals who rely on electricity to operate life-sustaining electronic equipment, such as a respirator or dialysis machine, should pre-register with PSEG Long Island to receive priority attention in the event of an outage. To request the service, call PSEG Long Island at 1-800-490-0025. They should also inform their rescue squads and fire departments of their needs, in case of emergency. Customers with life-sustaining equipment should also have emergency back-up equipment on hand, since immediate restoration cannot be guaranteed.

Mother Nature can be unpredictable. It’s wise to have an emergency kit on hand year round. Here are some things to include:

Too many deaths: Modernize Roadways, Make them Safer for All Users

(New York, NY) Assemblyman Edward Hennessey is calling on the New York State DOT to design and deliver streets that are safer, more usable and welcoming for everyone. New York State adopted a Complete Streets policy in 2011.

Completing the streets requires planners and engineers to design and operate roadways with all users in mind, including bicyclists, public transportation vehicles and riders, motorcyclists and pedestrians of all ages and abilities.

“It is time to make our roadways more accommodating to the growing number of bicyclists, walkers and runners. It happens with smarter, safer complete streets that are tailored to communities’ usage and needs,” said Assemblyman Hennessey.

“Depending on the community, complete streets could mean sidewalks, bike lanes, special bus lanes, accessible public transportation stops, in short, designs that enable and encourage people to use cars less, walk and ride more, get out and about in their communities,” said Assemblyman Hennessey.

Assemblyman Hennessey is currently pushing for funding for roadway projects that include pilot programs for a Safe Route to Transit Program for traffic calming around transit systems; safety bike lanes along roadways; emergency evacuation routes in flood-prone areas; and intersection improvements. He is also calling for Suffolk County to dedicate half of any speed camera revenue to traffic calming hard construction projects at the proposed school zones.

Hennessey also noted the need for tougher legislation.

“We have a very big problem on Long Island with hit and run drivers, people who flee the scene leaving the pedestrian or bike rider to die on the side of the road. My bill A7315 seeks to increase penalties and de-incentivize drivers from fleeing the scene of an accident. I believe this will prove to be a very important step in enhancing safety for road users, but we must do more and that is where modernizing our roads comes in. Completing our streets to make them safer for everyone just makes sense,” Hennessey said.

The NYS Department of Motor Vehicles reports that in 2012 in Suffolk County, 312 pedestrians and 45 bicyclists were killed by vehicles; another 559 pedestrians and 338 bicyclists were injured that same year. Tri-State Transportation Campaign reports that the rate of pedestrian and bike fatalities make up 27% of all traffic fatalities in the state. However the NYS DOT thus far allocates only 2% of its funding for transportation improvement projects to make the roads safer and more complete for non-vehicle users.

“Just take a look around and see who is using the roadways besides motorists: everyday walkers, moms pushing strollers, children and kids going to school or the corner store, people riding their bikes to work, retired couples taking the air and staying fit; bicyclists and runners in droves. In fact, Long Island has become a haven for large groups of cyclists and runners. We are no longer simply a car culture. It is time for our roadways to reflect that.”

Over 300 art lovers attend to view over 50 works of art

(Mineola, NY) Nassau County Comptroller George Maragos hosted the first Nassau County “Women of the World” Art and Photography Exhibition to promote local female artists and to support the growing arts and film industry in the County. The Exhibition, which kicked-off Women’s History Month in Nassau County, attracted over 300 attendees to view pieces from 53 local award winning artists. The winning artists were Victoria Selbach in the fine arts category and Asia Lee for photography. (Long Island, NY) The Nassau County Missing Persons Squad has reported details involving a missing female which occurred on Monday, February 24, 2014.

According to detectives, Jasmine V. Joseph a 22 year old female Asian Indian was last seen leaving her Syosset home in a 2012 gray Nissan Altima, to attend college classes at NYIT in Old Westbury.

Jasmine V. Joseph, 22, is described as 5’4” tall, 120 lbs, brown eyes and black hair. She was last seen wearing white and black sneakers, black jeans and a green sweater.

Joseph called her parents at 5:17 pm and stated she was studying at the college library and has not been seen or heard from since.
