Attorney General Will Operate Hotline To Address Language Access, Polling Place Barriers And Other Civil Rights Problems Today From 6 A.M. To 9 P.M.; Schneiderman: Effort Will Help Ensure Equal Access To The Ballot Box 

(NEW YORK) Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman opened an Election Day hotline to help ensure that all eligible voters are able to cast an effective ballot in today’s General Election. The Attorney General urges voters to call the office’s hotline at 800-771-7755 or email civil.rights@ag.ny.gov at any time between 6 a.m. and 9 p.m. to report issues or problems at the polls.

“My office is committed to full enforcement of the Voting Rights Act and other federal and state laws that require equal access to the ballot box,” Attorney General Schneiderman said. “Our Election Day hotline will help ensure that all eligible voters across our state are able to exercise their constitutionally protected right to vote on Election Day.”

Since launching the hotline last year, Attorney General Schneiderman’s Civil Rights Bureau has fielded hundreds of complaints from voters and worked with local election officials and others to troubleshoot and resolve many issues faced by voters at the polls. This year’s monitoring efforts come on the heels of recent agreements secured by the Attorney General’s office with Schenectady, Sullivan, Ulster, Rockland, Dutchess, Putnam and Chautauqua counties pursuant to Section 4(e) of the Voting Rights Act, which requires that certain Spanish-speaking voters be provided with bilingual ballots, bilingual election-related materials and language assistance at the polls. In addition, the Attorney General’s Office will be focused on barriers impacting voters with disabilities and other issues faced by minority voters.

The Attorney General’s Office will receive and respond to election-related complaints relating to any of the statutes that the Office enforces. Attorneys within the Office’s Civil Rights Bureau will work with election officials across the state to respond to and address problems as they arise.

The Election Day hotline is part of Attorney General Schneiderman’s ongoing statewide initiative to ensure that these and other voters have equal access to the political process and do not encounter language barriers on Election Day.

(Glen Cove, NY) The Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County recognizes Christina Romeo as Upstander of the Month of November 2013.  Christina is currently a freshman at the College of St. Rose in Albany.  She is a graduate of Sachem High School East and is a resident of Farmingville.

Christina had been a victim of bullying from a young age. According to Christina, she felt “miniscule because of those who brought me down. I chose to believe that I was nothing, due to another person.” While struggling with bullying, Christina was introduced to Peer Education; a group within Sachem High School East that helps students educate each other on topics of bullying and intolerance. As a member of Peer Education, Christina found “the spirit hidden within me; I found a purpose. My purpose was to stand for those who had no voice.”

Christina turned her experience as a victim into a movement of education and inspiration. Through a school-sponsored event named “Challenge Day,” Christina led discussions to educate her peers on the dangers of intolerance.

Now, as a Freshman at the College of St. Rose, Christina is pursuing psychology to become a school psychologist in order to help young people with bullying. She is an active member of her college community and continues to be an Upstander through programs such as “Help Yourself Academy,” a mentoring program for children. Of her experience, Christina says, “I firmly believe that to make a difference in the world you must always start with the little things. Whether it is a small act of kindness to a stranger or just complimenting yourself in the mirror before you start your day. Everything counts towards progress.”

Seven Queens Historic Sites Are Participating

(New York, NY) On Sunday, Dec. 8, 2013, the 26^th Annual Holiday Historic House Tour, sponsored by the Queens Historical Society, will kick off the holiday season with seven sites participating. Each of these NYC landmarks will offer special activities, refreshments and a glimpse at what life was once like during the holidays. Each site has its own unique story to tell that will be featured along with special holiday programming for the tour.

The participating sites include: The Kingsland Homestead, Voelker Orth Museum, Bird Sanctuary & Victorian Garden, Lewis H. Latimer House Museum, Friends Meeting House, Flushing Town Hall, the Bowne House, and, new this year, the Louis Armstrong House Museum. The program runs from 1 pm to 5 pm on Dec. 8.

Here’s what is happening at each historic site this year:

Kingsland Homestead (c. 1785) was occupied by the same family until the 1930s. In 1968, the house was moved from its original Flushing site to its current location. Lewis H. Latimer House Museum (constructed 1887 to1889) was home of African-American inventor Lewis H. Latimer, who lived there from 1903 until his death in 1928. The Friends Meeting House is the first house of worship in the village of Flushing and NYC’s oldest structure in continuous use for religious purposes. It was built in 1694.
