The walk will take place at Heckscher Park in Huntington, at the corner of Prime Avenue and West Main Street, on Saturday, September 28th from 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM. “Kiss Cancer Good-Bye” will feature activities for kids with a focus on healthy living, live music, a pre-walk warm up and performances from local dance schools.

“We are inviting businesses to get involved in a local event that was created so that families with small children could easily participate and show their support for the American Cancer Society,” explained Dr. Inna Gellerman, Gellerman Orthodontics. “Kiss Cancer Good-Bye gives local businesses a chance to show their support for the American Cancer Society while meeting parents and children from the area who come out to enjoy a fun event while supporting an important cause. We picked the ACS because their work supports individuals, families and research for those suffering from all different kinds of cancers.”

Last year was the first Kiss Cancer Good-Bye walk at Heckscher Park, and despite less than ideal weather, parents, kids and sponsors enjoyed a fun day that included a pre-walk warm up, the walk itself, outdoor games, a dance performance, and massages. More than $6,000 was raised for the American Cancer Society, and this year the team has set a goal of $10,000.

Local businesses are encouraged to become involved in many different ways, on many different levels. Companies can have their names appear on the commemorative T-shirt, on trail sign that will line the walking path, or at a Sponsor Table, which offers an opportunity to meet and greet community members. A Memory Line will give participants a chance to pay tribute to cancer survivors or honor the memory of loved ones. Donations for raffle baskets will also be gladly welcomed.

(New York, NY) This morning, the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies moved to slash the FY 2014 Interior and Environment Appropriations budget by 18 percent.

The bill zeroes out the Land and Water Conservation Fund, a program designed to protect and expand parks, while falling short of restoring years of budget cuts to the National Park Service. It also blocks progress on clean water and climate. Environment New York Field Organizer Eric Whalen issued the following statement:

“This bill is an atrocious attack on our parks, water, and the future of our planet.

“New York’s parks represent our commitment to protect the very best of our natural legacy for future generations – and this bill throws that commitment in the garbage. Gutting the Land and Water Conservation Program puts New York’s tourism and outdoor recreation industries and some of our most beloved landscapes at risk.

“The Land and Water Conservation Fund has been consistently underfunded. In last year’s budget, this enormously successful program was only funded at a third of its intended budget, leaving many park improvements and expansions unfinished. Enough is enough. It’s time to give our parks the resources they deserve.

“This bill doesn’t stop at eviscerating parks funding; it also blocks the cleanup of our waterways. From the Hudson River to the Finger Lakes, too many of our waterways face runoff and sewage pollution when it rains. More than 97% of New York’s drinking water comes from streams that are vulnerable to pollution and development. The House Interior Appropriations Subcommittee bill would block the Obama administration from tackling stormwater pollution and restoring protections to all of our waterways.

“Finally, after New Yorkers sweltered in record-breaking heat, this bill would block measures to cut global warming pollution. We are tired of watching U.S. House leaders fan the flames of global warming by allowing carbon pollution to spew without limit from the smokestacks of dirty power plants.

“It’s hard to imagine a worse attack on our parks, waterways, and the future of our planet. It’s time to stop staging this political theatre with our environment and start implementing real solutions to the pollution that plagues our air and water. The subcommittee should jettison this bill and start over.”

(NEW YORK) Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman and Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli today announced the guilty plea of Van Holmes, a nonprofit executive accused of pocketing tens of thousands of dollars in taxpayer funds intended for public services in New York City. The joint investigation conducted by the Office of the Attorney General and the State Comptroller’s office, with assistance from the City Department of Investigation, revealed that Van R. Holmes — the president of the Young Leaders Institute, Inc. — stole more than $85,000 by creating dozens of false records and forged documents which he filed with State and City agencies in order to obtain public money.

Today, Holmes pleaded guilty and will serve six months in jail, concurrent with five years probation; he has also agreed to pay back $95,000 in restitution. Today’s plea was filed before Justice Chin-Brandt in Queens Supreme Court.

Attorney General Schneiderman and Comptroller DiNapoli issued the following joint statement in response to today’s plea:

“Defenders of government must also be its harshest critics, and it is crucial that we bring swift justice to anyone who betrays the public’s trust by abusing taxpayer funds. Today’s plea and sentencing are an appropriate punishment for the crimes committed against the taxpayers of New York and the children for whom these funds were intended. We thank the Department of Investigation, as well as staff in both the Attorney General’s and Comptroller’s offices, for their diligent work and a successful outcome in this case.”

(Long Island, NY) The State Labor Department today released preliminary local area unemployment rates for June 2013, which are calculated following procedures prescribed by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The state’s unemployment rate relies in part on the results of a telephone survey of 3,100 households (out of more than 7 million) in New York State.

The state’s private sector job count increased by 110,500 from June 2012 to June 2013. As reported last week, the state’s unemployment rate was 7.5% in June 2013.

The data in the table above are not seasonally adjusted, which means they reflect seasonal influences (e.g., holiday and summer hires). Therefore, the most valid comparisons with this type of data are year-to-year comparisons of the same month; for example, June 2012 versus June 2013.

Labor force statistics, including the unemployment rate, for New York and every other state are based on statistical regression models specified by the U. S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. These are the most up-to-date estimates of persons employed and unemployed by place of residence. How 15 Minutes Can Be Fatal; Other Summer Dangers to Avoid

(New York, NY) Summer brings fun and sun, but pet parents should be aware that under those blue skies and barbecues, there are a number of situations that can be dangerous for pets. Although certain circumstances may seem harmless, the summer season can be deadly if pet parents aren’t careful. To help pet parents keep summer safe, Petco identifies everyday situations that have the potential to harm pets this summer and ways to prevent them.

Inside The Car: On a 78-degree day, the temperature inside a parked car can soar to between 100 and 120 degrees Fahrenheit in just minutes, and on a 90-degree day, the interior temperature can reach as high as 160 degrees in less than 10 minutes. Sadly, an animal left in a hot car can sustain brain damage or even die in just 15 minutes. The moral of the story, never leave dogs, cats, or any other pet in the car. Even cracking a window does little to relieve the heat on a hot summer day.

Rattlesnakes: Warm summer weather calls both snakes and people out of hibernation. Outdoor enthusiasts may find themselves face to face with a less than welcome rattlesnake. However, unlike people, dogs may not have the know-how to avoid this venomous creature. Instead, their curiosity may lead them directly into the danger zone. While outside, especially in rural areas, keep dogs on a non-retractable leash, close by so they can be supervised. In addition, proper training not only keeps pets mentally alert but it teaches them to walk side by side with their pet parent rather than pull and lead full speed ahead. If a rattlesnake is spotted, calmly and slowly back away from the snake until you are no longer within striking distance and until the snake stops rattling. Then carefully leave the area.

Birds of prey: These birds have been known to injure or attempt to abduct cats, small dogs and other small animals like rabbits and guinea pigs. This is especially true as people get outside with their pets in summer and humans continue to encroach on the birds’ habitat. The bottom line is: never leave a small pet outside without supervision. Also, learn to look for and read important signs. For example, if the chirping of birds suddenly stops, this can mean a predator may be circling above. If this is the case, immediately take pets indoors to avoid a potentially dangerous situation.

Hiking: Hiking with pets is a favorite activity for many people in the summer. However, it can be harmful if dogs overheat in the hot summer sun. A dog’s normal temperature is about 101.5 and when a dog’s internal temperature reaches 105 or above, his or her life is in danger. A good way to tell if a dog is overheating without a thermometer is when their tongue hangs from the side of the mouth and is weighted at the end, as well as when they are panting excessively. To help avoid this, pack the same amount of cool water for a pet as yourself. If a pet begins to overheat, place them in the shade immediately and pour cool water onto the pads of their feet first and then continue over other parts of their body. Placing booties on their paws will also help keep them safe on the rough terrain and prevent their paw pads from burning.

State crime prevention association is chosen for national program that provides law enforcement and their communities with tools to prevent and report financial fraud

(Buffalo, NY) The New York State Crime Prevention Coalition is proud to announce it will participate in the Investment Fraud Prevention Program sponsored by the National Crime Prevention Council (NCPC) and the FINRA Investor Education Foundation. The program is designed to help reduce investment fraud among consumers by expanding the reach of the FINRA Foundation’s Investor Protection Campaign.

Through the program, New York law enforcement officers will receive training on the “Outsmarting Investment Fraud” tools, so that they are better equipped to address fraud in their communities. New York officers will in turn educate local citizens who will develop increased skills to prevent and report investment fraud. Materials that result from this program will help consumers identify common persuasion tactics, protection strategies, and where to turn for help. They also will assist New York law enforcement and their community partners to launch prevention campaigns or hold investment fraud events.

As a part of the Investment Fraud Prevention Program, the New York State Crime Prevention Coalition will conduct a series of Investor Protection Education Campaigns with a vision to reduce the incidence of investment fraud among investors. Guided by a growing body of research exploring why investors fall prey to investment fraud, the campaign will explore who is most often targeted, reveal established risk factors that differentiate victims from other investors, and identify the most common persuasion tactics used to perpetrate investment fraud. The campaign will develop and distribute fraud prevention resources and conduct outreach to investors.

Before 1986, Crime Prevention education was the responsibility of the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services/Office of Crime Prevention.  In 1986, the Division of Criminal Justice Services reorganized and decided that Crime Prevention should be taught by an outside organization that they would help develop. Thus, in 1987 the New York State Crime Prevention Coalition was developed.

The Coalition was created to continue the teaching of Crime Prevention throughout New York State and to act as the liaison between the National Crime Prevention Coalition and the State of New York.  The goal of the Coalition is to promote crime prevention methods and techniques designed to reduce criminal opportunity and victimization through education.

The Coalition is made up of a voluntary board of law enforcement officers and community volunteers who are practitioners of Crime Prevention for their individual employers and community groups.

(Melville, N.Y.) The 4th Annual Over 50 Fair returns to the Melville Marriott on Sunday, September 29 from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  The one-day expo is being organized as a “celebration of life on Long Island” for people over 50.

To make it even easier for attendees to participate in this year’s event, there will be free valet parking as well as free scooter rentals for those who need one, compliments of Patriot Mobility, Inc.

“The Over 50 Fair is part health and wellness fair, part conference and part activities and lifestyle expo,” said Fair Director Barbara Kaplan, who also organizes Long Island’s popular All Kids Fair every April.  With 30 classes covering a variety of disciplines, there will be “something for everyone at the Over 50 Fair,” she added.

This year’s attendees will recognize some of the speakers from last year, while many are new to the Over 50 Fair.  Classes will include 2 comedy shows, Zumba, social media, weight loss, bio-identical hormones, essential oils, and iPad apps.

Over 80 exhibitors will be participating, offering a broad spectrum of services and products relevant to baby boomers and seniors, including local medical and dental practices, financial experts, and education providers, plus weight loss, vitamins, in-home care, and even psychic readings.   Meditation classes will take place all day.

Geraldine Puglia of Deer Park, an “over 50” who has attended all three previous Over 50 Fairs, described last year’s event as “very informational and fun.”

The Fair’s slogan, “60 is the new 50!” summarizes the philosophy of the event’s organizer, that Americans are living longer and should seek to live life to its fullest.  Says Kaplan, “There are so many opportunities here on Long Island. You just need to know where to look to find them.  Many can be found at the Over 50 Fair.”

Free health screenings will be available, such as body fat analysis, blood pressure checks, and oxygen saturation.

Attendees are encouraged to bring their non-perishable food and cash donations for The INN (Interfaith Nutrition Network), a local non-profit, to exchange for raffle tickets for exciting and valuable prizes.  Other non-profit organizations participating include the Lymphatic Research Foundation, SeniorNet at Family Service League-L.I., and the Long Island Alzheimer’s Foundation.
