(Long Island, NY) The Second Squad reports the arrest of a Hicksville man for a Robbery that occurred in Hicksville at 5:01am on Saturday July 11, 2015.

According to Detectives, defendant Alfredo Uribe, 16, did enter the 7-11 located at 384 W. John Street. The defendant armed with a rifle, later determined to be a BB gun rifle, approached the male victim cashier, 36yrs., pointed the rifle at the victim and demanded cash. The proceeds were an undetermined amount of US currency, cigarettes and cigars.

A witness to the incident contacted the police. As the defendant fled the scene on foot he was observed by responding officers. After a short foot pursuit the defendant was located and placed under arrest.

All proceeds were recovered and no injuries were reported.

Defendant Alfredo Uribe is charged with Robbery 2nd degree, Criminal Use of a Firearm and Criminal Possession of Stolen Property. He will be arraigned on Sunday July 12, 2015 in First District Court 99 Main Street Hempstead.

Grant-Funded Program Seeks To Improve Health and Reduce Obesity Among Low Income Families in Nassau and Suffolk

(Long Island, NY) Cornell Cooperative Extensions of Suffolk County and Nassau County, along with Family Residences and Essential Enterprises, Inc. (FREE), is hosting the launch of the Long Island’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program/Eat Smart New York (SNAP-Ed/ESNY) Program at The Farm at St. Joseph, 1725 Brentwood Road, Brentwood, on Wednesday, July 15 at 10am. All media is invited to attend.

Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) of Suffolk County will oversee the SNAP-Ed/Eat Smart New York Obesity Prevention Program through 2019.  CCE will serve as the lead agency, working with CCE of Nassau and Family Residences and Essential Enterprises, Inc. (FREE).

The program will be funded for five years through a $6.5 million grant from the NYS Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance. The grant is part of $14.7 million in federal funding provided to the state for nutritional education and assistance.

The goal of Eat Smart New York is to improve health and reduce obesity among low income families who receive Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits or are SNAP eligible.

CCE of Suffolk/Nassau and FREE will bring education to families in targeted schools and communities to increase consumption of fruits and vegetables, decrease consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages and increase physical activity. Staff will also educate families who are eligible for food assistance but not yet receiving this benefit.  A variety of education strategies will be utilized to reach low-income families—including policy and environmental approaches, and social media and marketing.

The USDA reports that more than 2 million New Yorkers, 12% of the state population, do not have enough money to meet their basic nutritional needs. Currently, there are 127,345 food assistance recipients in Suffolk and another 67,200 in Nassau plus a significant number of families who are eligible but do not receive assistance.

The Farm at St. Joseph is an affirmative business of Family Residences and Essential Enterprises, Inc. (Long Island, NY) The Seventh Squad reports the arrest of a Massapequa man at 2:55pm on Friday, July 10, 2015.

According to Detectives, defendant Ronell Jones, 25, on June 23, 2015 did engage in a verbal argument with the female victim, 21, of Massapequa. That argument became heated and twice the defendant did put his hands around the victim’s neck and applied pressure until she lost consciousness.

After regaining consciousness the victim left the scene on foot and attempted to use her cellular telephone when the defendant came up behind her and grabbed the phone from her and began running from the scene. The victim was brought to an area hospital where she was treated and released.

The investigation led to the arrest of the defendant without incident on July 10, 2015.

Defendant Ronell Jones is charged with two counts of Strangulation 2nd degree, Robbery 3rd degree and Grand Larceny 4th degree. He will be arraigned on Saturday July 11, 2015 in First District Court Hempstead.

(Long Island, NY) The First Squad reports the details of an Assault that occurred on Friday, July 10, 2015 at 10:06 p.m. in Baldwin.

According to detectives, a male victim, 26 years of age was leaving a party on Ann Street in the vicinity of Jeffrey Drive when he heard gun shots and felt a pain in his right leg.

He was transported in a private auto to a local hospital for treatment of his injury.

(Long Island, NY) The Seventh Squad reports the arrest of Massapequa man for Robbery that occurred on July 4, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. in Massapequa.

According to detectives, on July 4, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. the defendant Christian Ramirez, 21, entered the County Line Farms located at 5840 Merrick Road and handed the female clerk a demand note. Ramirez fled the store with an undetermined amount of cash. There were no injuries.

A subsequent investigation led detectives to Ramirez who was placed under arrest on July 10, 2015 at 2:55 p.m. in Wyandanch.

(Long Island, NY) The Fourth Squad reports the arrest of a Floral Park man for Grand Larceny that occurred on Friday, July 10, 2015 at 4:53 p.m. in Franklin Square.

According to detectives, Fifth Precinct Officers responded to a call for larceny from an auto that occurred in the parking lot of 1040 Hempstead Turnpike. Upon their arrival they were given a description of the defendant Daniel Cappelli, 37, which they located a short distance away and placed him under arrest.

A Subsequent investigation by detectives discovered that on June 8, 2015 Cappelli removed property from a car in the parking lot of 740 Hempstead Turnpike, Franklin Square. He also removed property from a parked vehicle at 990 Holzheimer Street, Franklin Square on July 5, 2015 and made fraudulent purchases with the victim’s credit card.

Cappelli is charged with two counts of Grand Larceny 4th degree, Petit Larceny, Forgery 3rd degree and Identity Theft 3rd degree. He will be arraigned on Saturday, July 11, 2015 at First District Court in Hempstead.

(Long Island, NY) Suffolk County Police Marine Bureau officers rescued three people from the water of the Great South Bay after their boat ran out of fuel on Friday, July 10.

The officers responded to the location aboard patrol vessel Marine Juliet and found the owner, Christopher Williams, 18, of Brentwood, and two other male friends in the water attempting to pull their boat to shore with a rope approximately ½ mile south of Hecksher State Park at6:48 p.m. The men were wearing flotation devices and stated to police they had been in the water for approximately 45 minutes.

The officers removed the three men from the water and towed their boat approximately two miles to the Hecksher State Park boat ramp.

Officers conducted a safety equipment inspection, and cited Williams for failure to carry visual distress signals and for a discharged fire extinguisher. The officers also issued warnings for other missing required safety equipment.

To help ensure your safety on the water, The Marine Bureau offers several tips.

• Check all required safety equipment is on board and operable.
• Leave a float plan with someone on shore with your destination and expected time of return.
• Carry a cell phone or Marine VHF Radio in case you need emergency assistance.

(Long Island, NY) The Major Case Bureau is investigating a Bank Robbery that occurred on Friday, July 10, 2015 at 4:03 p.m. in New Hyde Park.

According to Robbery Squad detectives, two male white subjects entered the Valley National Bank located at 699 Hillside Avenue and each passed a demand note to tellers. The tellers complied and handed over an undetermined amount of U. S. currency. The subjects fled on foot westbound on Hillside Avenue.

Subject #1 is described as in his 40’s, 6’0” tall, facial hair, wearing a gray baseball cap, dark sunglasses, a gray t-shirt, a red long sleeved shirt, dark pants and gloves.

Subject #2 is described as in his 40’s, wearing a gray baseball cap, gold framed bifocal glasses, blue hooded sweatshirt, dark pants, and gloves.

There were 7 employees in the bank at the time. No injuries were reported.

(Long Island, NY) A Suffolk County jury has convicted a 32 year old Kings Park man of manslaughter in the first degree and endangering the welfare of a child in the beating death of his 43-day old son in 2011, Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota said.

Christopher Foster was found not guilty of second-degree murder. The trial before State Supreme Court Justice William Condon in Riverhead started on June 22.

The charge of manslaughter in the first degree in the indictment is a class “B” felony defined as when a defendant, being 18 years old or more, “with intent to cause physical injury to a person less than 11 years old “recklessly engages in conduct which creates a grave risk of serious physical injury …and thereby causes the death of such a person.”

An autopsy established the infant, Jonathan Hertzler, suffered a fractured skull, four broken ribs and bruises to his face.  The Suffolk County Chief Medical Examiner testified that there was evidence the boy suffered bruises that were inflicted before the night of his death on October 11, 2011 and that the fatal injuries were caused by multiple blows.

The baby’s mother, Clarissa Hertzler, testified the baby was a source of constant aggravation to Foster and that he often became angry when the infant cried.  Assistant District Attorney Dana Brown told the jury that on the night of the baby’s death, Foster was the last person to hold his son and that the defendant called his boss, but not 911, to report the baby wasn’t breathing.

Foster was remanded to the county jail and faces up to 25 years in state prison when he is sentenced on September 8.

(Long Island, NY) A Ridge man arrested in April for driving with a 9-month-old passenger while his ability to operate a motor vehicle was impaired by drugs will be arraigned Monday July 13 in Riverhead on charges contained in a grand jury indictment, Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota said.

Wilfredo Figueroa, 21, drove through a stop sign and narrowly avoided striking an unmarked patrol vehicle at a Shirley intersection on April 14.  Figueroa was arrested and charged with Aggravated Driving While Impaired by Drugs with a Child Passenger 15 Years Old or Younger (Leandra’s Law), Endangering the Welfare of a Child, Criminal Possession of Marijuana 5th Degree and Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance 7th Degree.

In addition to a bag of marijuana, police found a small amount of heroin in the defendant’s possession.

Judge John J. Toomey (third floor of the courthouse) will unseal the indictment.  The court calendar will be called at 9:30 am.
