On June 1 at approximately 11:50 a.m., three men entered a residence on Eastern Avenue and stole assorted jewelry and electronics including a Sony PlayStation 4.

The three suspects are described as white Hispanic males, mid to late teens, with black hair.

With Public Arts Presentations/Installations Debuting on August 7, 2015 in Downtown Riverhead

(Long Island, NY) East End Arts is pleased to announce the participants in their professional development program for artists of all disciplines, titled JumpstART. This program provides the opportunity for artists to get a jumpstart on their artistic careers by learning about the fundamentals involved to best grow their business – their art! Participating artists learn from artists who have succeeded in making a living with their art. This program also offers the amazing opportunity for artists’ work to get high visibility through public presentation. In addition to a number of workshops, allparticipating artists have the unprecedented opportunity to design and implement a public art project in downtown Riverhead, unveiling Friday, August 7, 2015. A second 2015 JumpstART event will take place in East Hampton in November with several of this year’s JumpstART artists. This program is for all visual and performing artists, of any discipline, and participants were selected through an application process.

East End Arts’ Executive Director Patricia Drake Snyder is pleased with the progress of JumpstART. “It has been a wonderful experience to witness again the professional growth of the artists as well as the see the community so engaged in the process. This year’s JumpstART program has expanded by welcoming back last year’s artists as mentors to the new class. JumpstART is setting the stage for the expansion of artistic opportunities for the East End of Long Island through creative placemaking, using the arts to engage community.”

Of the 33 applications received, only 16 artists were chosen to participate. The 2015 group of JumpstART artists is a diverse group when referring to artistic mediums, concepts for their public arts projects; some of the participants are just starting to explore their art while others are accomplished. Program participants include:

East End Arts developed this intensive curriculum dedicated to the business side of art. It is East End Arts’ belief that with the necessary tools, an artist is better able to take advantage of creative opportunities that arise and be more likely to be aware of opportunities that exist. The program began with an orientation on March 15, 2015 and has continued with a series of intensive workshops led by industry professionals throughout March, April and May; a mentorship component with program alumni; and will culminate with a public art project in Downtown Riverhead on Friday, August 7, 2015. (Long Island, NY) The First Squad reports the details of a Burglary which occurred on Tuesday, June 30, 2015 at 5:00 A.M. in Baldwin.

According to detectives, First Precinct Officers responded to an alarm at T-Mobile, located at 1199 Grand Avenue and discovered a broken window and an open rear door.

An investigation revealed over 100 iPhone and Samsung cell phones had been removed from the store. Three unknown males were seen leaving the store through the rear door and fleeing in an unknown direction.

(Long Island, NY) The Major Case Squad reports the arrest of Selvin Esquivel, 33 of Uniondale, for a Burglary that occurred on Wednesday, August 20, 2014 at 11:15 am in Roosevelt.

According to detectives, a 24 year old female victim was upstairs in her Underhill Avenue home when she heard a noise on the first floor. The victim went downstairs to investigate when she was met by two males both armed with black handguns. The subjects ransacked the entire home while subject # 1 stayed with the victim. The subjects then fled the scene in an unknown direction. Proceeds were a cell phone, assorted jewelry and an undetermined amount of US currency. There were no reported injuries.

According to Robbery Squad detectives the defendant was located at the Nassau County Correctional Facility where he was being held on unrelated charges. Esquival was charged with one count of Robbery 1st degree, one count of Burglary 1st degree, one count of Robbery 2nd degree, one count of Burglary 2nd degree, one count Unlawful Imprisonment 2nd degree and Endangered Welfare of a Child. He has been previously arraigned for these charges at First District Court in Hempstead.

(Long Island, NY) The Fourth Squad reports the arrest of defendant Alexander Wachmyanin, 50, no known address, for a Robbery that occurred on Wednesday, April 22, 2015 at 3:00 pm in East Rockaway.

According to detectives, Wachmyanin, while inside CVS, 488 Ocean Avenue, was observed shoplifting assorted store merchandise. After leaving the store without paying, the store manager, assisted by another employee, chased the subject westbound on Prospect Avenue. A brief struggle ensued over the stolen property which was eventually recovered by the store manager.

Wachmyanin, who continued to flee, was again followed on Prospect Avenue. He confronted a female victim who was about to enter her running car, pushed her out of the way and jumped into the vehicle. Other witnesses, who observed what had transpired, ran to her aide and attempted to pull him from the car. The subject then put the car into reverse, struck a parked vehicle directly behind him and then went forward, driving up onto and across the victim’s lawn. He continued and fled eastbound in the victim’s gray 2010 Toyota Corolla, N.Y. registration EVW1600, which has yet to be recovered.

According to detectives, upon receiving forensic evidence and during a continued investigation the defendant was arrested on Sunday, June 28, 2015 at 12:46 p.m. in Hempstead.

Previously, the Fourth Squad had reported the arrest of David Melis, 59, of Holtsville for the above crime. The Nassau County District Attorney’s office dropped all charges against initial subject David Melis. Melis had been charged based on numerous witness identifications.

Wachmyanin is being charged with two (2) counts of Robbery 2nd degree, two (2) counts of Grand Larceny and three (3) counts of Petit Larceny. Wachmyanin was arraigned on Monday, 06/29/15 in First District Court, Hempstead.

Senator Tom Croci celebrates Army Veteran, Paul Oddo, as he is presented with a mortgage-free home in Mastic Beach, NY

(Long Island, NY) Senator Croci joins representatives from Bank of America and the Nehemiah Community Reinvestment Fund who have partnered together to present a renovated home, mortgage-free, to Army veteran Paul Oddo.

“When there is an opportunity of this nature to honor and thank a veteran who has risked his life for our country, it will have a positively profound effect not only on Mr. Oddo, but on this community. I’d like to thank Bank of America and the Nehemiah Fund for recognizing the importance of honoring our military heroes and for donating this home, free of a mortgage, to Mr. Oddo and his fiancé, Maria. It is so wonderful we have programs like this that pay tribute to our returning veterans,” said Senator Croci.

Mr. Oddo joined the Army in 2006 and deployed to Iraq in 2007 and 2009 as part of the 504^th Parachute Infantry Regiment in the 82^nd Airborne Division. Upon his retirement from the Army, Mr. Oddo has continued his service to others by assisting veterans, most recently assisting with the opening of the Nassau Community College’s veteran’s resource facility.  Mr. Oddo hopes to continue his commitment to helping others by completing his Master’s degree in social work from Adelphi.

UPDATE: Jonathan Cardona-Hernandez, 16, of Central Islip, has been identified as the man who was found fatally shot in Central Islip.

(Long Island, NY) Suffolk County Police Homicide Squad detectives are investigating the shooting death of a man in Central Islip on Tuesday, June 30.

Third Precinct police officers responded to Nicoll Avenue, south of Messina Street, after a 911 caller reported hearing shots fired at 5:50 a.m.

When officers arrived, they discovered a man who had been shot lying on the street. The man, who has not yet been identified, was pronounced dead at the scene by a physician assistant from the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner.

(Long Island, NY) Assemblyman Dave McDonough (R,C,I-Merrick) announced that he is sponsoring a 2015 Summer Reading Challenge at elementary schools in his district. The Summer Reading Challenge is designed to encourage students to continue learning through reading during the summer months.

“Just because the school year is over, it doesn’t mean that students should stop reading,” McDonough said. “The Summer Reading Challenge encourages parents to read with their children, and teaches these young minds the importance of reading in their efforts to become lifelong learners.”

McDonough has distributed over 5,000 Summer Reading Challenge calendars to elementary schools throughout the 14^th Assembly District. The calendar includes a list of recommended books students and their parents can read during the summer months. The recommended reading list suggests books written for students from preschool age to sixth grade, and includes categories such as adventure, fantasy, friendship, humor, mystery, poetry and sports.

During July and August, if a student marks the calendar for each day they read for at least 15 minutes and reaches at least 40 days, they may mail the calendar to McDonough’s office and receive a New York State Assembly Excellence in Reading Certificate.

“Many local school districts have agreed to distribute Summer Reading Challenge calendars to their students. Their support is essential to promote learning and reading during the summer and make this program a success,” McDonough concluded.

(Long Island, NY) As the 2015 legislative session drew to a close, Assemblyman Chad Lupinacci (R,C,I-South Huntington) continued his efforts to recognize and protect the brave military veterans in New York State. Both the Assembly and Senate passed Assembly Bill 8174-A, which Lupinacci co-sponsored, to provide any honorably discharged military veteran the ability to collect up to three years of retirement service credit for their military service.

“I have the utmost respect for every soldier who has honorably served our country. These brave men and women deserve equal opportunities to receive retirement service credit, regardless of when they served or what their duties were,” said Lupinacci. “I’m proud to have co-sponsored this bill to ensure our veterans are treated with the respect they have earned. I hope the governor will make the right decision by signing this bill into law as quickly as possible.”

(Long Island, NY) The Third Squad reports the arrest of a New Cassel man for Burglary that occurred on Monday, June 29, 2015 at 10:14 pm in New Cassel.

According to detectives, defendant Carlos Morinville, 22, entered a Sixth Street residence through a window and proceeded to the basement.  The female victim, 65, discovered the subject when she noticed the basement light was on.

When the subject attempted to flee the male victim, 73, pushed Morinville back down the stairs.  The subject pulled out a box cutter and motioned towards the victim.  The male victim locked the basement door and called Police.  Third Precinct officers responded and placed Morinville under arrest which he resisted. 

Subsequent investigation revealed that Morinville had committed seven additional burglaries.  The locations of the residences are as follows:

• 6/04/15 – Maple Avenue, Westbury
• 6/10/15 – Sheridan Street, New Cassel
• 6/11/15 – Pearl Street, New Cassel6/13/15 – Hopper Street, New Cassel
• 6/19/15 – Cambridge Avenue, Westbury6/22/15 – Fourth Avenue, Westbury6/25/15 – Albany Avenue, Westbury

Morinville is being charged with Burglary 1^st Degree, seven (7) counts of Burglary 2^nd Degree, Criminal Possession of a Weapon 4^th Degree and Resisting Arrest.  Morinville will be arraigned on Tuesday, 06/30/15 in First District Court, Hempstead.
