(Long Island, NY) The Long Island alternative transportation advocacy organization, Car-less Long Island, is holding its first annual Long Island “Bike-to-Work Fashion Parade” on May 7^th.  Gathering for the parade begins as 9 a.m. at Hofstra University’s North campus.

The parade will follow a 6.5-mile loop beginning and ending at Hofstra University. There will be a 2.3-mile cut-off for pedestrians, disabled participants, cyclists with younger children and cyclists who simply would prefer a shorter ride. Participants are encouraged to dress up and adorn their bicycles. There will be a festival with prizes for the best costumes and bikes at the end of the parade. The festival leads into Hofstra University’s Dutch festival with food and flower vendors, music and rides for small children.

“There are many reasons why Long Islanders should support alternative forms of transportation, such as biking,” says Car-less Long Island founder and chairwoman, Sylvia Silberger. “Clearly it is much more environmentally friendly and bicycle commuters are able to incorporate a healthier active life-style into their daily routine. But also, it reduces vehicular congestion, benefitting all motorists, and many studies have shown that walk- and bike-ability helps local businesses thrive. There are also many Long Islanders who need alternative forms of transportation because they are unable to drive or own their own cars and we all benefit if everyone as access to the transportation necessary to survive in this world.”

Car-less Long Island (CLLI) was founded in the summer of 2015 as a project of the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island. “It seems I have often found myself in conversations with other Long Islanders who would like to be able to get around without a car, but are frustrated by the danger and inconvenience inherent alternative modes of transportation,” says Silberger.  She founded CLLI to counter the “nihilistic feeling that this is just how Long Island is – we are a car-culture and that will never change.” Silberger is optimistic that the Bike-to-Work Fashion Parade will allow Long Islanders who would like Long Island to be a more bike-friendly community realize that they are not alone.

(Long Island, NY) Suffolk County Legislator Bill Lindsay visited NBTY’s CapsuleWorks Facility in Bayport last Thursday March 24^th. As chair of the Economic Development Committee of the Legislature, Lindsay saw this opportunity as a good chance to sit down with one of the biggest employers on Long Island and discuss the great opportunities that exist here in Suffolk County.

New Hotline Serves as a Lifeline to Residents

(Long Island, NY) Suffolk County officials and substance abuse providers jointly announce another initiative the County has undertaken to address the opioid epidemic plaguing the region and across the country.

“Like many places in this country, Suffolk County is facing an opioid epidemic of historic proportions,” stated County Executive Steve Bellone.  “We need to tackle this epidemic on all fronts  — including prevention, treatment and law enforcement.  My administration has made it a priority to explore and launch new, evidence-based tools in combatting the heroin and opioid epidemic. The creation of a local 24/7 hotline is now another tool in our arsenal to assist those who are battling opioid and heroin addiction and their families.”

Working with Stony Brook University Medical Center through the NYS Delivery System Reform Incentive Payment Program (DSRIP) and with the County’s private and public community partners in the substance abuse field, county officials recognized an urgent need for the establishment of a 24-hour hotline where people can call to get screenings, referrals and follow up.

“The number of heroin deaths in Suffolk County has nearly tripled since 2010,” said Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory. “This alarming data demands our immediate attention. A centralized hotline for people in crisis is a critical step toward saving lives, but we must do more. My colleagues and I look forward to our continued work with both the County Executive and officials from Nassau County as together we fight to stem Long Island’s heroin epidemic.”

“Substance abuse is a pervasive issue which touches the lives of everyone in our communities, not just those who are addicted.  This initiative will provide opportunity for addicts to reach out during their time off need and access treatment and support options easily.   Often, there is a critical and brief period of time when a person sees clarity and makes the decision to seek help.  This hotline can be fertile ground for change and recovery as it can quickly link residents to crucial  healthcare services,” stated Legislator William R. Spencer, M.D.

The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) will operate the 24 hour hotline and will provide screenings, referrals and follow ups for those seeking assistance with substance abuse. Providing a single phone number to call for a myriad of resources and services is key to assisting those who are battling addiction and their families.  Ensuring effective follow up is essential as there is a short window of time to engage a client and get them into appropriate care to address their substance abuse needs.

“LICADD and Suffolk County officials are hopeful that having access to qualified professionals to facilitate substance abuse treatment referrals 24 hours a day and 7 days a week will offer individuals and families the on demand support they need to access assistance and licensed treatment facilities,” stated Steve Chassman, Executive Director LICADD, LCSW, CASAC. “Expanding support and referral services is yet another dimension of healthcare needed to quell the current status of this devastating public health crisis. ”

“Every second counts to a mother whose son or daughter was found and saved from overdosing,” said Kara Hahn, the Legislature’s Majority Leader and author of several laws credited with preventing more than a thousand opiate overdoses in Suffolk County since the summer of 2012. “And every hour and every day that slips by trying to find quality, affordable, accessible treatment is critical. Mothers, fathers, husbands, wives, loved ones, and especially the addicts themselves are desperate for help. The opportunity for a breakthrough with an addict can be short lived as their willingness to seek treatment ebbs and flows.  There is nothing more frustrating than having that willingness end before treatment is available. I’ve spoken to many desperate people searching for solutions, searching for a place to turn. Now we have that place to turn.”

The hotline will be live April 1, 2016.  The Suffolk County Health Department will provide oversight and analyze data to monitor its effectiveness and identify trends and emerging issues in the community.

(Long Island, NY) The Fifth Precinct reports the arrest of a male for Burglary that occurred on October 01, 2015, October 3, 2015, January 20, 2016 and February 5 and 26, 2016 in Westbury and Franklin Square.

According to detectives, after an investigation, on March 29, 2016 officers from the Bureau of Special Operations responded to Queens Central Booking (unrelated incident in New York City) and placed under arrest defendant Jeffrey W. Waiksnis, 39, of Floral Park for the following burglaries:

• October 01, 2015 – Walgreens -15 Old Country Road, Westbury, approximately 200 cases of beer were taken by the defendant.
• October 3, 2015 – Walgreens – 15 Old Country Road, Westbury, approximately 8 (12) packs of beer were removed.
• January 20, 2016 – CVS- 610 Old Country Road, Westbury, approximately $4500 worth of assorted cosmetics.
• February 5, 2016 – CVS- 640 Franklin Avenue, Franklin Square, approximately 226 bottles of nail polish.
• February 26, 2016- CVS-640 Franklin Avenue, Franklin Square, approximately $420 worth of socks and nail polishes.

Defendant Waiksnis is being charged with 3 counts of Burglary 3rd Degree, Grand Larceny 4th Degree and Petit Larceny. He will be arraigned on Wednesday, March 30, 2016 at First District Court, Hempstead.

The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty. Defendants are entitled to a fair trial with the burden on the prosecution to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

(Long Island, NY) Suffolk County Police Third Squad detectives arrested three suspects and confiscated three guns, cash and drugs after a man reported that he was the victim of a robbery at an apartment in Bay Shore on Tuesday, March 29.

Suffolk County Police responded to a 911 call from a 17-year-old male who claimed that three men forcibly robbed a gold necklace and cash from him when he went to purchase marijuana at an apartment located on Hemlock Drive, Bay Shore.

As a result of the investigation of the robbery, detectives were able to secure a warrant from First District Court to search the premises. During the execution of the search warrant, three loaded handguns and a quantity of heroin, cocaine and marijuana were discovered. In addition, digital scales and other paraphernalia typically used for the packaging and sale of illegal drugs were confiscated.

Third Squad detectives arrested three suspects:

Johnathan Sostre, 21, was charged with Robbery 2nd Degree, two counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance 3rd Degree, Criminal Possession of a Weapon 2nd Degree and Criminal Use of Drug Paraphernalia, 2nd Degree.

Sostre and Barham are being held at the Third Precinct and Mills is being held at the Fourth Precinct. They are scheduled to be arraigned this morning at First District Court in Central Islip.

This investigation is continuing. Detectives ask anyone with information about this criminal activity to contact the Third Squad at 631-854-8352.

Bronx Poet Famous for His Live Theatrical Performances

(Long Island, NY) Poet Edwin Torres will read from his collected works at Farmingdale State College on Thursday, April 14.  The reading will be held in the Ward Hall Great Room at 11 a.m.  The public is invited and the event is free.

A self-proclaimed “lingualisualist” rooted in the languages of sight and sound, Edwin Torres was born in the Bronx and is a longtime resident of New York City. He is a poet whose highly acclaimed performances and live shows combine vocal and physical improvisation and theater. He is the author of collections such as Ameriscopia and One Night: Poems For The Sleepy. He is co-editor of the journal/app Rattapallax.

Assemblyman Dave McDonough (R,C,I-Merrick) issues update on budget negotiations, shroud of secrecy surrounding ‘three men in a room’

(Long Island, NY) “It is deplorable that after two of the three most powerful men in Albany were convicted of corruption, we are still left victim to the ‘three men in a room’ process of negotiating the state budget. This is a perfect example of how Albany is not inclined to change for the better and absolute power corrupts absolutely. How is it that three individuals have the exclusive power to spend the tax dollars of 19 million people? It is preposterous.

“What we need are term limits and pension forfeiture for corrupt lawmakers, both of which seem to be left out of this year’s budget talks. Only then will Albany truly embrace accountability and take power out of the hands of a chosen few and return it to the people of this state. The public deserves to know how we spend their money, and I won’t stop fighting until that happens.”
