(Long Island, NY) Suffolk County Police on Wednesday, December 23 arrested a Port Jefferson Station man for driving while intoxicated after he drove the wrong way on Sunrise Highway and caused a fatal motor vehicle crash.

Thomas D’Eletto was driving his 2010 Toyota Corolla in the left lane of westbound Sunrise Highway, just east of Horseblock Road, when his vehicle was struck head on by a 2007 Audi A4 that was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes at 5:37 a.m.

D’Eletto, 57, of Aquebogue, was pronounced dead at the scene by a physician assistant from the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner. The driver of the Audi, Christopher O’Brien, 54, was charged with Driving While Intoxicated and was transported to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Center in East Patchogue for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. He will be arraigned at a later date.

The investigation is continuing and detectives are asking anyone with information on this crash to call the Vehicular Crime Unit at 631-852-6555.

(Long Island, NY) Assemblyman Chad Lupinacci (R,C,I-South Huntington) on Saturday joined in the Christmas cheer as a neighborhood Huntington Station pharmacy welcomed its very special visitors from the North Pole.

STAT Script Pharmacy transformed its New York Avenue property for Cookies With Santa, a community event complete with free toys, games, raffles, food and, of course, “St. Nick” himself, who was accompanied by Mrs. Claus. Pharmacy employees also collected new, unused toys during the event, which drew hundreds of area residents for a day of fun and Yuletide cheer.

(Long Island, NY) The Nassau County Public Information Office reports the details of a Robbery that occurred on Tuesday, December 22, 2015 at 12:55 p.m. in East Garden City.

According to detectives, a male subject entered the Rolex section of the Tourneau Jewelry Store located inside the Roosevelt Field Mall, 630 Old Country Road. The subject walked to the rear of the store to look at watches. While in the rear of the store the subject brandished a handgun demanding the watches from the clerk.

A store security guard nearby grabbed the subject and a struggle ensued. As they reached the threshold of the store entrance a single round was discharged from the subject’s weapon striking a mall employee standing a short distance away in the back of his shoulder.

The struggle continued to an adjacent store where multiple security guards were able to detain the subject until police arrived. Oliver Lee, 21, of Little Neck was placed under arrest at the scene. The male victim, 67 years of age, was transported to an area hospital and is listed in serious but stable condition.

Lee is charged with Robbery 1st degree, Assault 1st degree, Criminal Use of a Firearm 1st degree and two counts of Assault 2nd degree. He will be arraigned on Wednesday, December 23, 2015 at First District Court in Hempstead.

(Long Island, NY) Nassau County Police Commissioner Thomas Krumpter,  PBA President James Carver and NCPD Foundation Chairman Eric Blumencranz will host a holiday shopping spree for over a hundred homeless children at Matty’s Toy Store, 1350 Peninsula Boulevard in Hewlett , NY on Thursday, December 24, 2015 at 11:00 am.

The children will be getting a holiday treat thanks to the generosity of the Nassau County Police Department. The Nassau County Police PBA and Nassau County Police Foundation will be playing Santa by providing buses and free new toys for families at homeless shelters across Long Island. Each child will receive a hundred dollars to spend. Due to the tough economy, some families can’t afford some of the expenses associated with the holidays.

According to the most recent U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development survey, the national percentage of homelessness totals roughly 1.6 million people, On Long Island there are over 8,000 homeless students, indicating a sharp a rise among the youth population.

 

Senator Croci Introduces Legislation for a Constitutional Amendment to Take Away Pensions from Public Officials That Have Been Convicted of a Felony

(Long Island, NY) New York State Senator Thomas Croci (R, C, I, – Sayville), Chairman of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security, Veterans and Military Affairs and Chairman of the Senate Standing Ethics Committee, has introduced a Senate bill (S6326) that would strip away the pensions of public officials that have been convicted of a felony.

“We are the guardians of a great public trust.  The security of New Yorkers, and the legitimacy of our government institutions are our fundamental responsibility.  If you violate the public trust and are convicted of a felony, you must then forfeit a public pension.  A public officer has a duty to maintain this trust throughout their service and taxpayers should not be expected to pay for the pension when that breach of good faith has occurred,” stated Senator Croci.

The bill proposes a constitutional amendment that would allow for a law to be adopted so that public officials could lose their pension benefits when convicted of a breach of public trust, regardless of when they entered the retirement system. Under the current Public Integrity Reform Act, only public officials who joined the state retirement system on or after November 13, 2011 are subject to the forfeiture of their pensions for committing certain felonies related to public office.  The New York State Constitution forbids the retroactive reduction of pension benefits prior to that date, so an amendment is necessary to make sure all public officials are held to the same high standard.  It would apply to public officials in the executive, legislative, and judicial branches at all levels of government who are members of the New York State and Local Employees Retirement System.

The legislation also makes the distinction that the forfeiture of a public pension does not go into effect until all appeals pertaining to a felony conviction have been exhausted.

(Long Island, NY) Suffolk County Crime Stoppers and Suffolk County Police Vehicular Crime Unit detectives are seeking the drivers of two vehicles that fled the scene of a fatal hit-and-run crash in Patchogue earlier this month.

Joseph G. Orlando was attempting to cross Route 112 on December 5 at approximately 3 a.m. when he was struck by four vehicles, two of which fled the scene. Orlando, 64, of Riverhead, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Detectives have determined the two vehicles that fled the scene are a 2011 to 2015 dark-colored Hyundai Elantra and a 2000 to 2007 white Ford Taurus.

A man entered Target, located at 2975 Horseblock Road, and stole a Dyson vacuum on December 8 at approximately 3:50 p.m. The man fled in a gray vehicle.

(Long Island, NY) The Major Case Bureau reports the arrest of a Long Beach man for Criminal Possession of a Weapon which occurred on Tuesday, December 23, 2015 at 9:00 p.m. in Levittown.

According to Narcotic/Vice Bureau Detectives, an undercover investigation was conducted with the assistance of the Criminal Intelligence Rapid Response Team at the Tri-County Flee Market located at 3401 Hempstead Turnpike. During the investigation Glenn S. Sable, 67, was operating his sales booth G.S. Cutlery at which time he sold a Switchblade Knife and Kung Fu stars to undercover detectives. Sable was placed under arrest at the scene.

As a result of the investigation the following items were recovered: 1 loaded Ruger 380 hand gun with 6 rounds, (62) sixty two Daggers, (5) five Cane Swords, (39) thirty-nine Metal Knuckles, (64) Kung Fu Stars, (6) Electronic Stun guns, (65) sixty five Gravity Knifes, (94) ninety four Switchblade Knifes, (11) eleven Chukka Sticks, (2) two Blackjacks, (3) Metal Knuckles and (4) Expandable Batons.

Sable is charged with (12) twelve counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon 4th degree. He will be arraigned on Wednesday, December 23, 2015 at First District Court in Hempstead.

(Long Island, NY) The Fourth Squad is investigating a Robbery that occurred on Tuesday, December 22, 2015 at 4:45 p.m. in West Hempstead.

According to detectives, two male black subjects entered the McDonalds located at 380 Hempstead Turnpike and approached the female counter employee. After placing an order the first subject place a black plastic bag on the counter along with a demand note.

The second subject told the cashier to open the cash register drawer as he motioned to his waist band as if he had a weapon. The cashier complied and the subjects fled on foot in and unknown direction with an undetermined amount of cash. No weapon was displayed.

The first subject is described as 5’11” tall, heavyset, wearing a blue hooded sweatshirt, black baseball cap.

Subject two is described as 5’10” tall, thin build, wearing a black vest and a gray sweatshirt, a black winter cap, approximately 30 years old.

(Long Island, NY) The Seventh Squad is investigating a Robbery that occurred in Massapequa on Monday, December 21, 2015 at 9:13 PM.

According to detectives, a 42 year old male victim was approached by an unknown male subject as he walked back to his car through the Massapequa Mall parking lot located at 1 Sunrise Highway. The male subject asked for money and then attempted to grab a bag the victim was carrying.

At the same time another male subject approached and punched the victim in the back of his head with his hand. Both subjects then fled on foot in an unknown direction without any proceeds. There were no injuries reported. Both subjects are described as being male, black, 25 years of age.
