(Long Island, NY) Nassau County County Legislative Presiding Officer Norma Gonsalves and Dr. Vic Politi CEO/President of Nassau Medical Center will provide Narcan training for local residents, To help save lives and combat the Heroin epidemic, today Wednesday, September 16, 2015 from 7:00 p.m.. at Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC), located at 2201 Hempstead Turnpike in East Meadow. , Residents will learn how to administer the lifesaving antidote known as Narcan and reverse the fatal effects of an Opiate overdose. Attendees will also learn the warning signs of drug addiction, available treatment options, personal stories of recovery, and more.

A 2006 State law allows ordinary citizens to administer Narcan in an attempt to save a life, without fear of liability. Nassau County has already provided Narcan training for more than 3,600 people since 2012. At least a dozen trainees have used that knowledge – and a Narcan kit – to revive someone overdosing on Heroin or painkillers, and save their lives. Narcan is administered through a nasal spray, and is provided at no charge to trainees over the age of 18.

(Long Island, NY) People concerned about breast cancer are now able to chat online with a social worker or breast cancer survivor through a new service offered by the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program. The Adelphi program, the oldest breast cancer hotline in the country and located on Long Island, has been providing emotional support and information to New Yorkers for 35 years. Says program supervisor Heather Edmonson, “Our history has always been to respond to needs in the community. Now with so many people comfortable communicating online, we are making our one-to-one services available through this on-line chat.”

Those wishing to speak with a social worker or survivor should log on to breast-cancer.adelphi.edu during weekdays, 9 to 5, and click on CHAT. They will either reach someone immediately or receive a message that someone will get back to them shortly.

The hotline, which can be reached at 800-877-8077, is still in operation seven days a week, but Edmonson says the online chat is yet another way to make sure that people get the help they want. “Our motto is ‘you are not alone,’” she says, “and whether it’s on the phone or through the internet we want to be there for people.”

(Long Island, NY) State and local elected officials, Suffolk County Community College students, faculty and administration will gather to celebrate the ground breaking of a  two-story, 33,792- square-foot Renewable Energy and Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Center on the Suffolk County Community College Michael J. Grant, Brentwood campus that will be the first of its kind in the state community college system. Fifty percent of the $19.5 million center’s funding comes from New York State.

The ground breaking will take place on Thursday, September 17, 2015 at 12 noon.

The new facility will house laboratories and classrooms to teach installation, maintenance and repair of solar, photovoltaic, wind, geothermal and other green power technologies, according to Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Shaun L. McKay who said plans call for the building to be solar-powered with geothermal heating and would contain a prototype solar house on rails that could be used indoors or rolled outside to test various renewable energy materials.

(Long Island, NY) Jean-Pierre Lardoux, AIA, NCARB, affectionately known as J.P., who is founder and principal architect of Plainview-based Fusion Architecture, PLLC, was recently honored by Adults and Children with Learning and Developmental Disabilities, Inc. (ACLD), at the organization’s 2015 Golf Outing held at the Glen Head Country Club in Glen Head, New York. This year’s outing raised nearly $95,000 to benefit ACLD, a leading Long Island based not-for-profit agency devoted to providing opportunities for children and adults with autism, learning and developmental disabilities to pursue enviable lives, increase independence and foster supportive relationships within the community.

Mr. Lardoux led the design efforts for ACLD’s Charles Evans Health Services Center in Bethpage, Magnolia Manor Residential Group Home in Bethpage, the Alan and Ellen Spiegel Children’s Center in Bay Shore), and a host of other ACLD projects.  He was saluted during the Golf Outing by Joseph Ortego, president of ACLD’s Board of Trustees, and by his eight-year-old son Lucas Lardoux as a man who cares deeply about making a difference in the lives of other people.

“J.P.’s attention to detail and quest for the best defines him and Fusion Architecture,” Mr. Ortego said. “Those qualities have helped us in the pursuit of our mission, and all that J.P. has done for ACLD makes him a truly worthy honoree.”

(Long Island, NY) Suffolk County Legislator Bill Lindsay III ran with the legislative relay team during the Suffolk County Marathon/Half Marathon this past Sunday.

The race, a flat 26.2 mile course, was split between nine Suffolk County Legislators.

The race began at Heckscher State Park and proceeded through the downtowns of Oakdale, Sayville, Bayport, Blue Point and Patchogue. Proceeds from the event will benefit Suffolk County veterans.

According to detectives, a male subject entered the Mobil gas station located at 1589 Merrick Road displayed a black handgun and demanded money.

The 45 year old male victim complied and the subject fled the scene in a maroon colored Nissan Rogue, northbound onto the Meadowbrook State Parkway.

Proceeds were an undetermined amount of US currency. There were no reported injuries. The subject is described as a male hispanic in his early twenties.
