(Long Island, NY) Suffolk County Police Second Squad detectives are investigating a shooting that occurred in Greenlawn on Sunday, August 9.

Second Precinct police officers responded to the area of Stuyvesant Street between Crown Avenue and Brand Drive after a 911 caller reported a shooting at 12:01 a.m. When officers arrived, they discovered Aaron Jolly, 18, lying in the street with a gunshot wound to his right leg.

An investigation by Second Squad detectives revealed that Jolly was shot by an unknown person while he was standing in the street. Jolly, of Northport, was transported to Huntington Hospital where he was treated and released.

The investigation is continuing. Detectives are asking anyone with information about this incident to contact the Second Squad at 631-854-8252 or call anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.

(Long Island, NY) The Major Case Bureau reports the arrest of Elvi Rodriguez, 32, of Valley Stream in connection with two Bank Robberies which occurred on Tuesday, August 04, 2015 in Rockville Centre and Oceanside.

According to Robbery Squad detectives, at 1:21 P.M a male Hispanic in his mid to late twenties, approximately 5’ 5” tall with a thin build wearing sunglasses, a white t-shirt, black jeans and black and white sneakers carrying a black drawstring bag entered the Citibank located at 297 Merrick Road.

He presented a teller with a demand note at which time the teller complied giving him an undisclosed amount of cash. The suspect fled on foot in an unknown direction. There were 9 employees and 1 customer in the bank at the time of the incident. No injuries were reported.

At 1:40 P.M. the same man entered the Roslyn Savings Bank located at 3140 Long Beach Road in Oceanside and presented the teller a demand note. The teller complied giving the suspect an undisclosed amount of cash. The suspect fled on foot in an unknown direction. There were 6 employees and 1 customer in the bank at the time of the incident. No injuries were reported.

A subsequent investigation led detectives to Rodriguez, who, on Saturday, August 8, 2015 at 4:13 pm, was found to be occupying a stolen 2009 Suzuki SX4 outside of a Massapequa home. During the arrest Rodriguez resisted but was eventually placed into custody. In his possession were 3 white pills identified as Zolpidem.

Rodriguez is charged with two (2) counts of Robbery 3rd Degree, Criminal Possession of Stolen Property 3rd Degree, Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance 7th Degree and Resisting Arrest. He was arraigned in First District Court, Hempstead on 08/09/2015.

The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty. Defendants are entitled to a fair trial with the burden on the prosecution to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

(Long Island, NY) Second Squad detectives report the details of a Serious Aided that occurred on Saturday, August 08, 2015 at 12:30 pm in the waters between Cove Neck and Cold Spring Harbor.

According to detectives, a 34 year old female from Bayville, who jumped off a boat to retrieve a water tube, that became untied, began to swim back to the boat. The operator of the boat, who was unaware of the victim’s position in the water and was in the process of anchoring, put the engine into reverse.

The victim who approached the rear of the boat was contacted by the engines propeller causing her to suffer severe lacerations to her right leg. She was transported to an area hospital by a Nassau County Police Department Air Bureau helicopter for treatment of her injuries and is listed in critical but stable condition.

The boat was impounded for safety checks and the accident has been deemed non-criminal at this time.

(Long Island, NY) Suffolk County Police Second Squad detectives are investigating a shooting that occurred in Huntington Station on Saturday, August 8.

Second Precinct police officers responded to the area of West Hills Road and President Street after a 911 caller reported a shooting at approximately 1:35 a.m. When officers arrived they discovered Nelson Hernandez lying on the sidewalk with a gunshot wound to his back.

An investigation by Second Squad detectives revealed that Hernandez was shot by unknown person(s) while he was walking on West Hills Road near President Street. Hernandez, 22 of Huntington Station, was transported to Huntington Hospital in serious condition.

(Long Island, NY) Assemblyman Andrew Garbarino (R,C,I-Sayville) weighed in on the recent article published by Newsday revealing that 13 state legislators are eligible to receive their pensions despite being convicted of a crime. New data from the state comptroller’s office predicts that this will cost New York nearly $604,000 dollars a year in taxpayer money.

“It’s inexcusable that the people of New York will be forced to pay the pensions of state legislators who disregarded their responsibility to the state,” said Garbarino. “These individuals acted wrongfully and failed to uphold their duty and there is no reason we should be rewarding them for their corruption. Funding the retirements of such crooked politicians should outrage every New Yorker.

“While the Assembly Republicans have consistently pushed for legislation to strip these criminals of their taxpayer-funded pensions, the Assembly Democrats have made a concerted effort to dodge real reform,” Garbarino said. “Assembly Democrats have been coerced by big special interests and have avoided implementing legislation that would formally end this practice.

“During session I voted in favor of legislation that would strip these criminals of their pensions and put that money back into the hands of New Yorkers where it belongs. The Assembly Republicans and I recognize that continuing to allow convicted legislators to collect taxpayer-funded pensions is criminal. Serious changes must be made in order to restore the people’s trust in Albany,”

Garbarino has consistently voted in favor of legislation that would work to end corruption in Albany. Despite hurdles to reform from Assembly Democrats, Garbarino has vowed to remain committed to real reform in New York State.

(Long Island, NY) Third Precinct officers report the arrest of a New Hyde Park man for Driving While Intoxicated (Leandra’s Law) on Friday, August 7, 2015 at 10:35 pm in Old Westbury.

According to officers, Geo Jossy, 31, while driving northbound on Glen Cove Road, was stopped for suspicion of DWI. After interviewing Jossy it was determined that he was in fact intoxicated and was placed under arrest without incident.

In the vehicle at the time of the incident were his 1 year old and 3 year old children. They were released to their mother who was also a passenger in the car.

Jossy is charged with two (2) counts of Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated, Driving While Intoxicated, Driving While Intoxicated (BAC in excess of .08) and four (4) other Vehicle & Traffic Law violations. He will be arraigned in First District Court, Hempstead on 08/08/2015.

(Long Island, NY) Third Squad detectives are investigating two separate incidents during which shots were fired in Central Islip on August 6 and August 7.

Several gunshots were fired at a residence, located at 17 Third Ave., on August 6, at approximately 9:15 p.m. There were no injuries.

In a separate incident, shots were fired into an unoccupied vehicle parked in a driveway, located at 12 Brightside Ave., this morning at approximately 3:30 a.m. There were no injuries.

Detectives are investigating if the two incidents are related.

(Long Island, NY) Suffolk County Community College’s Associate Dean for Continuing Education Nina Leonhardt garnered two prestigious awards this summer for her work as a role model and leader in STEM – Science, Technology, Engineering and Math – education.

Leonhardt, of Ridge, was awarded the Margaret Ashida STEM Leadership Award by the New York State STEM Collaborative for her work as STEM leader for consistently demonstrating qualities of STEM Leadership, and creating connections between people and organizations in order to enhance STEM career paths in the community and for making a lasting and meaningful contribution to STEM career paths for the community.

Margaret Ashida was the first executive director of STEMx, a nationwide network of state STEM organizations who died in 2014 in a diving accident. Before becoming national STEMx director for the Battelle Memorial Institute, Ashida served as director of the Empire State STEM Learning Network at the State University of New York. In that role, she provided key input for the early development of STEMx, helping to tackle challenges and forge consensus among member states.

Leonhardt will also be recognized in the upcoming September STEM issue of INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine with its INSIGHT Into Diversity 2015 Inspiring Women in STEM Award. Leonhardt is one of 100 women nationally who will be honored. The issue will publish on August 24.

Suffolk County Community College has award winning STEM programs and is a nationally recognized leader in providing quality STEM education as well as research and transfer opportunities for STEM scholars at the college.

Since 2004, Suffolk County Community College has been one of the strongest pipelines of interns to Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) and is second only to Stony Brook University in total number of participants in BNL research programs.

Since 2007, more than 100 Suffolk County Community College STEM scholars have been awarded competitive and paid research internships at DOE laboratories ranging from Brookhaven National Laboratory to Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory to Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee, and Los Alamos National Laboratory, in New Mexico.  Suffolk students have been selected for various research experiences at Stony Brook University since 2005.

This summer Suffolk County Community College has 25 students working in STEM research at National Laboratories, NASA and research universities.

(Long Island, NY) Crime Stoppers and the Nassau County Police Department are seeking the public’s help in identifying the pictured subject. The subject is wanted in connection with a Petit Larceny which occurred in East Garden City, New York.

On Thursday, June 4, 2015, at approximately 3:40 P.M., the subject was observed inside the Ultra Store located at 990 Old Country Road, East Garden City.

While present in the store the subject did steal two boxes of Burberry Cologne valued at approximately $160.00, and exit the store passing all points of purchase without making payment for the items. The subject fled the scene in an unknown direction.
