Legends Mark Gastineau, Cecil Fielder, and Wesley Walker Join Together for a Important Cause

(Long Island, NY) Legendary New York Yankee and New York Jets legends Mark Gastineau, Cecil Fielder, and Wesley Walker will gather together to fight cancer at a charity fund-raiser tomorrow, Tuesday, July 21, 2015, at 12:noon., at the Lido Beach Golf Course in Lido Beach, Long Island, at the annual Pat Cairo Family Foundation event. The Foundation has donated more than $3 million to help those struggling with cancer. Long Island has one of the highest rates of cancer in the U.S., and is home to many nationally-recognized survivor groups, including 1 in 9, the first cancer foundation to establish a mapping program for pinpointing areas where cancer is most prevalent.

The proceeds from the event will be donated to Calvary Hospital to help the terminally ill and to research efforts in women’s cancer. Pat Cairo spent approximately three months before her passing in March of 1995 at Calvary Hospital, which is an acute care specialty hospital serving advanced cancer patients.

(Long Island, NY) Suffolk County Police Fourth Squad detectives are investigating an armed robbery that occurred at a convenience store in Hauppauge on Monday, July 20.

A man entered 7-Eleven, located at 722 Townline Road, at approximately 1:50 a.m., displayed what appeared to be a gun and demanded cash. The clerk gave the suspect cash from the drawer and the suspect fled on foot westbound on Townline Road.

The suspect was described as approximately 6 feet tall with a thin build. He was wearing a mask, a black hooded-sweatshirt, black pants and sunglasses. The clerk suffered a minor injury during the robbery and was treated and released at Stony Brook University Hospital.

The investigation is continuing. Detectives are asking anyone with information on the robbery to call the Fourth Squad at 631-854-8452 or call anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.

(Long Island, NY) Assemblyman Chad Lupinacci (R,C,I – South Huntington) and Assemblyman Andrew Raia (R,I,C-East Northport) recently joined the Huntington Chamber of Commerce in welcoming a new business to Huntington Village. The Imperial Meat Company, a bar and restaurant located at 279 Main Street in Huntington, officially cut the red ribbon in celebration of their recent grand opening.

(Long Island, NY) Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman wrote an op-ed in the Huffington Post today on further steps needed to reform the criminal justice system in New York. Below are highlights from the op-ed:

ON THE NEED FOR ADDITIONAL CRIMINAL JUSTICE REFORM: There are serious structural issues that must be addressed if all our citizens are expected to feel our system provides equal justice under law. Without reform, we are consigning an entire generation of young, predominantly African-American men to incarceration with little hope of a successful future.

ON THE NEED TO RAISE THE AGE: In those cases where our children do end up in the system, they should be treated as children. After the governor and legislature failed to agree on a “Raise the Age” proposal this past session, New York remains one of only two states that automatically treats 16- and 17-year-olds as adults. This is unconscionable.

ON THE NEED FOR BAIL REFORM: Once they are charged, too many poor New Yorkers find themselves trapped by our unjust bail system. Unable to pay for bail, they languish in Rikers Island or other jails while they await trial, regardless of guilt.

There are many interesting bail reform proposals circulating in both the city and state. My friends in government must move forward on those reforms.

(Long Island, NY) First Squad detectives are investigating a robbery that occurred in Uniondale on Saturday, 07/18/15 at 1:00 A.M.

According to detectives, a male victim, 18, while walking with friends on Babylon Tpke., was approached by a group of males driving in a black newer model Honda with silver writing on the lower part of the windshield. The victim and his friends ran through rear yards in an attempt to flee the occupants of the car.

The subjects, armed with a knife, located the victim on Centennial Ave. One subject punched the victim causing him to fall to the ground. The victim covered his face as the other subjects began punching and kicking him. The subjects removed the victim’s pink Nike sneakers from his feet and took his wallet containing his I.D.’s.

The subjects fled the scene in the vehicle in an unknown direction.

On 07/18/15, the same black Honda drove down the victim’s block, stopped in front of his house revving the engine and then circled the block three more times.

Subject #1 is described as a male black, 16 years of age, 5’4” tall, medium build, afro, clean shaven, wearing black cargo pants, white shirt with stripes, and armed with a black gravity knife. Subject #2 is a male Hispanic, 18 years of age, 5’8” tall, thin build, Caesar style haircut, chin hair, wearing a dark ¾ sleeves baseball shirt. Subject #3 is a male black, age 20, 5’6” tall, stocky build, wearing a white t-shirt, black cargo pants, and dark fitted cap with a NY logo. Subject #4 is a light skinned male black. No further description is available.

(Long Island, NY) Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota and Martin Flatley, Chief of the Southold Town Police Department will update the media tomorrow, Monday, July 20 at the Southold Police Department HQ on the investigation of the fatal crash on County Route 48 and Depot Lane in Cutchogue that killed four women on Saturday.

The news conference is scheduled for 12:30 pm.

Steven Romeo, 55, was arraigned Sunday at Eastern Long Island Hospital in Greenport and ordered held in lieu of $500,000 cash bail or $1 million bond.  He pleaded not guilty to one count of driving while intoxicated.  He remains hospitalized.

Southold Police today identified the four women who were killed as: Brittany Schulman, 23, and Lauren Baruch, 24, both of Smithtown; Stephanie Belli, 23, of Kings Park; and Amy Grabina, 23, of Commack.

The injured women are Joelle Dimonte, 25, of Elwood, Melissa Angela Crai, 23, of Scarsdale, Alicia Arundel, 24, of Setauket, and Olga Lipets, 24, of Brooklyn.

The agencies investigating the crash are the District Attorney’s Vehicular Crimes Bureau, Southold Town PD, SCPD Vehicular Crimes Unit and the NY State Police.

(Long Island, NY) Suffolk County Police officers helped deliver a baby girl in Medford on Sunday, July 19.

Officers James Caporale and Paul Rocchio responded to a 911 call at approximately 7:15 a.m. at a residence located on Southaven Ave., Medford. When the officers arrived, they observed a 37-year-old woman in active labor.

The officers assisted the mother in delivering a healthy baby girl.

Both mother and daughter were transported via Medford Volunteer Ambulance to Stony Brook University Hospital.

(Long Island, NY) Suffolk County Police Homicide Squad detectives are investigating the drowning death of a 5-year-old girl in Islip on Saturday, July 18.

Suffolk County Police Third Precinct officers responded a home in Islip at approximately 7:30 p.m. after a 911 caller reported a child was found unresponsive in the backyard pool.

The child was transported to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore where she was pronounced dead.

The investigation is continuing.

More about artist Christina Schlesinger
Christina Schlesinger is an artist who lives and works in New York City and East Hampton, NY. For many years she worked in public art, creating large murals with street gangs and in some cases the homeless. Along with muralist Judy Baca, she created SPARC, the Social and Public Art Resource Center, in Venice, California. One of her murals, “Chagall Returns to Venice Beach”, has been declared an “iconic mural” by the City of Los Angeles. She taught Cultural History and Studio Art at the Ross School in East Hampton. Most recently, she had a show of her “Tomboy” paintings at the Leslie + Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art in SoHo. One of her paintings will appear this summer in the Ms. Magazine’s blog “girlie calendar” as “Miss July”. For the past several summers, she has taught encaustics at the Art Barge in Amagansett.

Dawn Daisley studied at Parsons School of Design where she believed graphics to be the visual language of her generation. She lived in the East Village in the 1970’s and viewed the pop art of that period as an ethnographer, trying to find parallels to her own experiences as a graphic designer. Dawn feels combining art, science and technology will be the future of artistic expression… art that speaks of a culture and its people. Dawn returned to school as a student at Pratt Institute for a BFA in Art & Design Education and found purpose, confidence and self-awareness in her abilities as a learner, teacher, and artist. She continued to complete an MA in Studio Arts at Adelphi University. Her work combines her years of professional experience in graphics and communication with fine art esthetics, creating a unique perspective.

(Long Island, NY) The Nassau County Police report the arrest of a Middletown man for DWI on Sunday, July 19, 2015 at 1:37 am in North Hills.

According to police, a Highway Patrol Bureau Police Officer patrolling westbound of the Long Island Expressway, observed Kingsley C. Chukwu, 45, operating a 2009 Honda failing to maintain lanes and swerving onto the right shoulder. A Vehicle and Traffic Law stop was initiated by turning on the emergency lights and siren at which time Chukwu exited at exit 32 and came to a stop.

An investigation revealed the defendant was operating a vehicle under the influence of an alcoholic beverage. Additionally the defendant’s three male children ages 4 (twins) and 6 years were seated in the rear seats and not wearing seat belts. The children’s 38 year old mother was a front passenger. Chukwu was placed into police custody without incident and transported to Central Testing for processing. The children were released to their mother. There were no injuries reported. Chukwu’s vehicle was impounded.

The defendant Kingsley Chukwu is charged with 3 counts Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated (Leandra’s Law), 3 counts Endangering the Welfare of a Child, Driving While Intoxicated 1192.2, Driving While Intoxicated 1192.3, and multiple Vehicle and Traffic Law Violations. Chukkwu will be arraigned Sunday, July 19, 2015 in First District Court.
